I’m no engineer or architect, but wouldn’t that roof design create massive shadows?
i think the curved glass would diffuse the light enough that it wouldn’t matter
All the better to deflect the top ten kids of twenty in the year they debut and GC style draft favours for a decade.
Edit: imagine if they get a decent coach….
Is it a retractable roof??
As shown in the “artist’s impression”, yes. There’s a reason that Docklands always has its roof closed.
Luckily Hobart only averages 5 “sunshine hours” a day (and obviously much less during winter).
How does it affect the TV viewing?
if it has criss/cross shadows over a cricket pitch it will be unplayable
Did they also say the transparent roof also removes the need for big light towers? Do they plan on not having any night games… surely I heard that wrong
there is lights on the beams holding the roof
I reckon that (lack of towers, not the bizarre transparent roof bit) was just a line to un-scare some protesters.
It’s an indoor stadium and its lights would be indoors, like Docklands.
Fair to say it’s going to be a problem.
Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin
US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis
The entire stadium will be in the shade by 3pm in winter anyway with the mountain to the west and already shorter daylight hours. It’s pitch black by ~5-5:30pm.
I also chuckle heartily at the amount of timber they’ve incorporated in the design… Gotta find uses for all that old growth forest they smash down…
If the roof functions as a mechanism to prevent half a stadium going blind from direct sunlight, I’ll call it a win.
Fk me it was hard to see at times at the MCG yesterday due to how bright it was.
Footy would be the one sport most affected by shadowing. Imagine flickerings of light/shade constantly as your running towards a high ball to mark it.
It’s new name is “The Blister”
The sun won’t go behind the mountain in the winter, but it might be low enough in the sky to be blocked by the stadium by 3:30 (source: I just walked outside and checked)
Don’t be jealous…
Every stadium roof should be transparent like Wimbledons.
If the MCG gets a roof one day, gotta be transparent.
Interesting that the Launceston stadium after the upgrades will hold more.
and I highly doubt the Hobart stadium can be upgraded to hold more.
