Tasmania - stole GWS media guy and $1B

Giants were allowed to pick a bunch of 17 year olds that spent the first year playing in the VFL together or stayed in their home state.

from Wikipedia

  • At the end of 2010, up to twelve 17-year-old players (born between 1 January – 30 April 1993), who were too young to enter the 2010 AFL draft. These players were not eligible to play senior AFL football in 2011, and would continue to undergo junior development, either in Sydney or their home state.
  • Up to ten players who were not on an AFL list but had previously nominated for a national draft. These players could be recruited at the end of either 2011 or 2012, with no more than ten players recruited in this manner over the two years. Greater Western Sydney could immediately trade any players recruited in this manner.
  • Up to sixteen players who were on an AFL list, but were out of contract at the end of the season. Again, these players could be recruited at the end of either 2011 or 2012, with no more than sixteen players recruited in this manner over the two years, and no more than one player recruited from any other club. Clubs who lost players in this manner received compensatory selections in the national draft; the number and value of these selections was determined based on age, contract size, on-field performance and draft order, and were permitted to be used in any year between 2011 and 2015.
  • Up to sixteen players recruited from the New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory zone, recruited at any time between 2010 and 2013, and from the Northern Territory zone, recruited between 2011 and 2013.

Jesus, they ■■■■■■ that up royally.

The article on Tasmania likely concessions was the same. They’ll be able to recruit a bunch of 17 year olds a year ahead of the 2027 draft. So, those future AFL players will be in the VFL program.

See above. They will have important kids in the VFL system.

I’ve thought for a long time that the game would actually improve with 16 players on the field. The average fan in the stands or watching on TV probably wouldn’t even notice the change — except that the game would be less congested and the ball movement cleaner.

If each senior list was cut by two players, and the same in the VFL squads, that would free up around 72 players. That’s enough to create a brand new list of 40, meaning you’d be strengthening the overall talent pool while adding another team — rather than diluting it.

Wingless VFA style

Why do you hate the 5-6-5 rule so much?

Sounds like the South - Sydney Swans early model

Yeah lifestyle wise it’s going to be a hard sell to get players out of Melbourne or any of the other big mainland cities. Combination of the weather, not a great deal to do there outside of footy (I did see a few months back the AFL was putting out a promotional flyer/magazine on the attraction of Tasmania for prospective recruits, and one of the thing it included was the world-class golf courses), etc. Not sure how Tasmanians would feel if half their squad still lived on the mainland and simply FIFO for games. It wouldn’t feel like they’re part of the community or the state…

Maybe the AFL can bring in another WA team, and send Bewick there instead?

Yeah, it might be all she wrote from here.

The findings are likely to be discussed but largely disregarded in the lower house (both Lib and Lab are pro-stadium). The upper house has a plurality majority of anti-stadium members. It would have been an uphill battle even with a favourable recommendation, but this makes it a very likely non-starter.

I don’t think it’s necessarily the end, but I think its the end for a 2028 start.

The Tasmanian government has leverage if it says they’re not supporting AFL teams playing in Tasmania. But against that, my understanding is the commission really doesn’t want a Tasmanian team, and doesn’t think its viable without local government support. The stadium would have effectively tied future governments into supporting the team.

I’m just over it to be honest. We can never have nice things down here. Yes our public hospital system, ambulance service, and housing are a ■■■■ show and need more funding. This has been the case since I was a kid.

I know for a fact the money that is ■■■■■■ up the wall in one of those sectors is astronomical, and I could see that same thing happening in the others.

I think the team should be canned by all involved and just move on. There will always be politicians working against the Stadium even if it gets off the ground. It will never get done or if it does it won’t be done well.

I was looking forward to the team coming in even though I would never stop supporting Essendon. It would have been nice to go and watch good AFL teams every second weekend down here, instead of the dross we get with The Rattlers playing at Ninja a few times a year.

How long is this game of chicken going to happen? I get no one wants to be seen as the bad guy who officially kills the ‘team’ but how much longer is this charade going to take place? Is there a deadline when the Tassie government finally votes on the stadium?

There’s no way they’re entering the league in 2028.

Has a stadium ever been financially beneficial in these reports? My understanding is they all run at a pretty significant loss initially. It’s the impacts of the psyche of a city and traffic it brings to the city that is beneficial. I remember going to Adelaide years ago to watch Essendon, the place was dead till the day of the footy game.

Fantastic, give me my uncompromised 2027 Draft back.

Stop: Compromised by Tassie.
Keep: Compromised by NGA and Father-Son though!

I moved this conversation to the correct thread.

I know someone who knows someone on the commission. Based on their comments the stadium was the deal-breaker and they were set on that.

Me reading between the lines: that’s because they never wanted a Tassie team so it was always a poison pill.

Yeah, fair shout.

It’s a bit of a bummer as I was looking forward to having Tasmania as a second side to follow in the AFL. Ahh well, guess it’s just Essington for now.

the calls for “put the money towards healthcare instead” are reactionary nonsense

the $375m the tas govt are putting in would pay for, what, 2 months or so of their entire healthcare system. it wouldn’t be a capacity-altering investment. it’d just get absorded quickly, and then you’re left with a still stretched system and no stadium.
