should be asking in the apple cult thread.

Now, there’s an opening for EFC merch

I got a screen protector at the Telstra shop…stops people sneaking a peek at what’s on your iPhone unless they’re directly behind you. Only $5 more than standard one from Telstra’s home brand…something beginning with S.

Yeah, the Russian at works who’s suspicious of everyone has one of those screens.

Ended up finding some decent ones on Amazon.

I’m playing with using a really old android tablet as a head unit for low.tech old ford ute . I got a 6 buck app called headunit reloaded .
it’s very good a lot of ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  around to connect . but I have it down to power on plus 2 steps now.
once it’s connected it’s very good. I’m running Android auto but I guess it does carplay too. not sure .
I looked at replacing the whole centre console with a new built in head unit but way over capitalising at a grand . so far it’s cost me 6 bucks plus an old tablet that works fine . I also found quite a few windscreen mounted versions off the shelf. some just over 100 . I like the look of this one at 200.

I’ll keep playing with my el cheapo trial till it ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  me then might get one of these if I get used to having one in the car. I’d probably rather have one in the car I don’t have to do anything with when I get in the car. just powers on with the car and off she goes

I bought an Eonon unit for cheap for my old Subie (maybe it was like $125 with an eBay discount code). It works great - it’s better than the $400 head unit that I put in my wife’s car. Wireless CarPlay. And the reversing camera is good too. I got the Eonon x3 (Linux based)

Nerds!

does it just power up and start with the vehicle ? no logging into anything and no settings each time ?

I am a big time nerd. I was born to be a tech nerd

Yep. Mine is mounted in dash in place of the old stereo; I bought an Aerpro adaptor that connected Subaru harness to iso harness that came with head unit, which simplifies things a lot. Aerpro has adaptors for most brands.

I guess with a windscreen mount you’d have to get power from the cigarette lighter, and send audio with FM transmitter?

yeah aerpro one for my car was a grand . if I was driving around everywhere for a living like I used to I could justify it, but i mainly work from home now so not driving as much . I’m going to use the ute a bit more for camping so I like the modern toys . I’m probably going to mount this on top of the current head unit on top of the dash. the top is a cover that comes off and I hope to be able to sneak the power and reverse cam cables down there to make it a bit more proper . I can buy another head cap so I’d I make a hole in the one I’m going to mount it on, I can always put another factory cap back over what I butcher later if need be

What! Mine was $12

What kind of car?

fg falcon ute . must be this cost of living CRISIS thing I keep on hearing about. lol

In that case, windscreen mount makes a lot of sense

Anyone having issues with Gmail on ios18? Not able to receive any new emails. Deleted and setup the account again - worked for a few days and the same problem has occurred.

I mean even at a grand it’s a significant upgrade on an old car imo almost worth it . they even have a dab module

They have just the fascia for about $500:

yeah I saw that but you still gotta buy a headunit . so I reckon you could save a bit with mix and match but if o was doing this I’d do the kit I reckon

Does anyone here use a VPN(and is it worth it? - what do you use it for?)

I have been thinking about getting nordvpn in the sales.

Yes.

Mainly for country spoofing when streaming, but also security/privacy, as all non-VPN activity is recorded and kept on your record by your ISP, as they are required to. Now I doubt many people are actually obfuscating illegal activity, but data breaches are a potential concern, where your entire internet history for years could potentially be sold to bad actors.

Anyhow, I have used PIA for a few years. It was OK, but many services can still detect that you’re using a VPN service and block content.

Express VPN has been flawless in avoiding that same detection, and claims it can’t be detected. So it’s my go to now. Has clients for most/all devices. Also very fast for streaming.

EDIT: You can get cheaper, or free VPNs if you only need a very basic service
