The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

Unless the AFL changes the rules we could always trade up by sacrificing a 2nd round pick or a future pick.

Honestly we need Kako, he’d be perfect for us. We should draft him with our first pick regardless of NGA rules, if we end up with pick 10 then just use it on him. Him and Saad-El Hawli could be dymamic for speed in our line-up (which we need).

Part of the issue is that regardless of what happens there’ll always be clubs that are negatively affected and clubs that are positively affected

The talk is at least one recruiter is on the record as having him in their top 12.

Also rumours swirling around the changes coming for NGA bid matching. Some are saying top 20, some top 15. Some are even suggesting you can match a bid anywhere but must use a pick within 10 of the bid to match.

I personally think Kako goes around pick 20. The dream would be the ability to match beyond pick 15, and we use a first before the bid comes in, meaning we add two nice talents to our list.

And for what it’s worth, I really like this year’s draft. There are about forty players I’d be happy to draft, which means without adding to normal picks we could well end up with three good young players that fill a variety of needs.

10-15 is where he will go, if he is at out pick we have to take him, and we should be looking to move up to get him.

Our list is in the position to make an aggressive move to address needs and a small forward play maker is clearly one of them.

I want Kako aswell so no offence is meant with this comment but what if the recruiting team decide that we have enough smalls and our priorities are midfielders in a midfield heavy draft iam sure they will roll the dice.
I hope they don’t reach for him just because he is a nga I want the best talent at the pick that will take us forward.

If our recruiters think we don’t already have enough midfielders and have an abundance of small forwards then we need new recruiters

We do have a lot of small forwards on the list just not many good ones

They should be walked out of the club.

We already have Parish, Hobbs, Tsatas not in the line-up. If clubs want to plunder the midfield stock in this draft, we should be taking advantage of that.

Absolutely but none of this fairy dust points BS.
To match you must give up a pick within a couple spots. Up to the club to trade for that anyway possible. So if he goes at say pick 10 then we have to find a pick in that region or deal with the club that takes him at pick 10

Don’t think that would be workable imo, would slow the draft down too much and don’t reckon many would trade. Can’t see it working without a points system.
Reckon you could make it a points match from the same round, maybe the bidding club gets the points deficit added to their pick the following year while the matching club moves back that far? Would encourage bidding.

Edit: no idea what that means if you bid at 1 though…

We already have live trading of picks etc. You could use the points BS to top up but the you at least have to cough up a pick from the same round.
Using this year as an example on current rankings
Brisbane with pick 10 choose Kakko
Essendon with pick 15 then have the option to trade picks with Brisbane or another club and get a deal done or we give up our first rounder and then find the rest of the points.
Where it would get tricky is if we didn’t have a first this year in which case it’s up to us to get one or offer Brisbane a future first

In your scenario if he is bid at pick 1 then we would have to deal with North or another club and North would have every right to ask for 3x firsts if we can get a deal done elsrwhere

A points system isn’t inherently a problem, the problem is being able to use like four 3rd and 4th round picks to match a first round pick

If clubs want the privilege of having priority over talent they spent resources developing (which I’m personally all for), there should be an actual downside to doing that and they should have to actually spend time planning for it years in advance

Looking at last year the wizard (who was better than kako) went top 5. The guy he is more similar to is Phoenix gothard, who went surprisingly high at pick 12. I think kako is a slightly better player than gothard personally, but yeah 8 to 15 would be the mark, as good small forwards are valued more highly now.

Kako and Gothard are quite different though. Gothard played high half forward and was more of a linking creative player that didnt hit the scoreboard very often, more like Gresham. Kako has played a combination of deep forward and through the midfield, probably projects as a deep small forward at AFL. I’d say he’s definitely more of a Watson/Papley/Kozzi comp.

They should have been walked out of the club years ago, iam not saying that they will do that though iam being hypothetical that maybe they value our smalls and think another position is the priority.
In my view the only position we need more than a small is a proper 198cm plus key forward

Sorry i was meaning in terms of pick range he is more like gothard as a small forward. Very good but not completely dominant like a Watson, who was always seen as a top 5, despite his size. Where do you think kako will go?

Its tough to say I think. Wouldn’t surprise me if he got squeezed down a few spots. Unlikely to drop any lower than Freo’s three first round picks as they are desperate for a small forward.

The thing that counts against his current projection I feel is that most top 20 lists aren’t currently including the key talls that will inevitably rise up the ranks as we get closer to the draft. Faull is back and kicking goals regularly. Shanahan had a big day today. History suggests there are always a couple of tall forwards taken in the top 10, and its likely even more force their way into the back end of the first round.

You don’t spend much time on this board, right? Kako is much discussed!

Not really true. Gresham, Guelfi, Menzie, Wanganeen and 2x Davey is 6, so about right. Two of those every chance to be delisted.
