The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

Hey @noobermensch, you’re much called upon and very patient with all our inquiries, even with the same questions asked repeatedly. You’re a better man than I am - and, guess what, I have another question.

By all reports, this is a deep draft, and we look like having a bunch of picks in the thirties and forties at this stage. I don’t know if you can answer this, and I know it’s far from an exact science, but looking at - say - pick 35/40 this year, where would you roughly place it in an average year?

@noobermensch If you’re drafting for Richmond how would you use 1, 6, 10, 11, 18, 20, 23, 24 :heart_eyes:

Its only a very rough guesstimate as you say, but I think in an average draft some of the guys likely to fall in the late 20s and early 30s would be top 20 picks, and we’ll see guys landing around our picks in the 40s that would have gone in the mid to late 20s in a normal year I believe.

An example will be someone like Tom Gross. Very good midfield prospect, solid in most aspects and super courageous, very reminiscent of a Rory Sloane… he would certainly have gone in the low teens in last seasons draft pool I believe, and he’s more likely to end up mid to late 20s this year.

I would trade them all to essendon for Ricky Dyson and a third rounder.

How would you use them after that? Could those picks build a full back, mid or forward 6 you’d be happy with? Crazy hand.

They’re doing a serious rebuild so I imagine they’re mostly going to pick best available, which will probably mean they go midfielders early and then look at key position players later. With the volume they have I imagine they can take some risks, like picking Hotton with his knee etc.

If I were Richmond I’d be rapt with so many high picks but wary of using them all this draft. I’d be looking to move a few of them into next years draft. I think it’s a bit of a risk taking so many at once without getting in some senior talent also to replace the experience they’ve lost. We saw with the Suns, and a lesser degree, the Giants, that a plethora of round one picks guarantee nothing. And the jury’s out on Yze - can he handle and successfully develop a young team that will likely be bottom four for a while?

As I understand it, one of the big arguments against taking them all in the one draft is that it creates a list management headache with them all hitting their contract extension timing at the same time, all hitting free agency in the same year etc.

Interesting point

Perfect for us to target some in 2 years that haven’t got the exposure they want

Can he play? … is the question

Its a midfield heavy draft which makes it a little hard, but maybe they can use first 2-3 for mids then go tall getting them a bit earlier than anticipated.

I really hope if Shannahan is still available at or around pick 18 ish that we trade up to grab him.
Ive wanted him or Armstong and Kako from this draft for a while now.

Shannahan in particular really impressed me in our vfl games. He kicked a bag of 5 in his third vfl game.

I’d want 2 picks off Richmond if it’s for our future first, so 18 and another within 25.

So now the dust has settled I’m thinking the best tactically would be if Kako gets bid on by Richmond.

If that happens we have the opportunity (if the player is still there that we want) to trade back in by using Melbourne F1. Perhaps with GWS.

Anything later than that and we are overpaying with Melbournes F1.

Incorrect. If someone fails to have enough points it impacts their next year’s picks. Like Freo in 2020.

Doesn’t it end up the same?
They’re still getting that 20% discount on the points attributed to next year’s pick.

(Its 2am so maybe I’m missing something)

Not sure that makes sense tbh.
There’s nothing stopping us trying to trade back in before Kako is bid on.

We’d just wait until the desired pick was up for selection to make the deal

I have a question. Does the amount of points you use to bid on an nga go up if picks get absorbed earlier? For example pick 27 is going to be absorbed by Levi Ashcroft, does that mean our picks 28 and 31 are now worth points equivalent of 27 and 30 now?
