The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

Jesse Dattoli highlights look very good for another small forward.

Leave the gun, take the Dattoli?

Kill the 2 birds with one stone and aim for getting Shanahan to join Kako.

Lions traded 32 and 45 to get 27 to begin with (I believe they wanted to consolidate picks due to open list spots).
Can’t see them going for it.

I fully get that. I look at it as play style and in some instances, I’d probably agree with it, but tone done the comparison somewhat.
I just noticed it more with that article than previous years.

It may also just be there’s more exposed data to judge these players. None of these players had any of their important junior career (16, 17 & 18) impacted greatly by COVID the way the last few drafts have had.

The only trade up option i see to get into the first round is with Richmond and they’d only do it for our future first. I reckon we’ll get desperate and sell the farm for a pick at about 20, post a kako bid.

That’s what I’m worried about. I reckon we have done a pretty job in positioning ourselves so far, but that could easily be undone by paying a Kings ransom to get back into this draft.

With our current picks I would be thrilled if we got:

Kako
Gerryn or Sims
Oliver
Ough

I think we should be looking to get creative like this and get more draft capital next year. Not sure cats would go for it unless there was something they liked there at 27/28.

If the trade is made on draft night I believe they can use more picks with points than open list spots? Little loop hole clubs have been using, unless it’s now closed?

I’d be happy with what we have next year. Our first and second, and Melbourne’s first. No need to be greedy and grab a mass of capital in any one year, keep the regular flow coming.

I would suggest next year the free agents available might be better than then 2024 class. We might target 1 or 2 big upgrades, and I understand Essendon has plenty of salary cap since we front loaded a number of those long term contracts. We could have Kako, 2 first rounders next year, 2 good free agents, along with maybe one or two upstarts across other rounds, and inclusion of Tsatas, Roberts and even El-Hawli or Hayes. That’s a big turnover of talent without creating even more options.

Which they wouldn’t know as we won’t know until they’ve already done the deal, as we won’t have 27/28 to trade after the Kako bid.

If Draper leaves next year via free agency we could be holding three first rounders along with the ability to trade two years in advance so we could be loading up for that draft as rebuild draft

If he has a good year but not a great year and we can palm him off, whilst developing Bryan well as first choice ruck it could be a great outcome. May end up being 3 middle rung first round picks. Sounds vaguely familiar…

Of the little I’ve seen of Vigo he looks woeful, but what the hell do I know, he could be a great long term project and be the second option.

Funny iam the opposite I think Vigo has the biggest upside of all three with he’s forward work but he definitely fell off in the back half of the season.

I think that was the problem for me, I was watching more VFL streams in the back half of the season and I struggled to see Vigo at all. I was really just watching for Tsatas and a few other young guys.

I think Reid is going to be the dud of the top 10. I just don’t think he’s skillset will translate well to AFL

Yeah in his early games against sandy and Southport he kicked 2.1 and 3 and was marking very cleanly then in the middle of the season went into the ruck for a bit and did well

AFL draft: How Essendon plans to get back into the draft after Isaac Kako bid

They traded out of the draft to dodge eating points on an Isaac Kako bid, but JAY CLARK reveals the Bombers’ plan to get back into the first round, and the clubs willing to move down the order.

AFL: The Fox Footy podcast discuss how the top five pick are shaping up ahead of the 2024 AFL Draft

Essendon is weighing up a move to off-load Melbourne’s future first-round choice for a first-round pick in this year’s draft.

However the move will have to come after a bid for Essendon small forward and next generation academy prospect Isaac Kako.

It means if a bid comes around pick 10 for Kako, Essendon could trade Melbourne’s future first-round pick for something in the teens of this year’s draft.

The Bombers’ first pick is otherwise slated to be number 28, but Essendon will eagerly eye a jump into this year’s crop if a trade partner can be secured.

St Kilda has told clubs it is open to splitting one of its top-10 selections in this year’s draft as part of a strategy to capitalise on the depth in this year’s talent pool.

The Saints have picks seven and eight in this year’s draft and have indicated they could be interested in trading one of them for two picks later in the first round.

Why does Clark suggest a potential trade needs to come after the Kako bid?

Couldnt we just trade our F1 or the Dees F1 for 10/11 from Richmond once those picks are reached (or any other club/pick) and then take the player before Kako is selected by another team?

Strange article…?
