The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

If we trade a F1st for a pick in this draft the actual pick number is irrelevant, the players name is important.

If we trade in and take Jobe Shanahan for example and he kicks 800 goals over the next 15 years, who will care that we traded pick 6 for 16?

If he’s a dud, well, we’ll have something to talk about on here for a while.

I think we will trade up to get him.

Fingers crossed we do

That sounds like a reasonable take

Interviewer: Today, we’re sitting down with Matt Rosa, head scout for the Essendon Bombers. Thanks for taking the time, Matt.

Matt Rosa: Happy to be here, always love talking about talent scouting!

Interviewer: So, you’ve recently drafted a player that everyone’s buzzing about. What caught your eye about this talent?

Matt Rosa: This player is exceptional not only on the field but off it as well. They have a great family background which is so important—strong values, support, and a sense of stability. These factors translate into their discipline, work ethic, and attitude in a team environment.

Interviewer: Interesting. And what about future leadership potential? How do you assess that in a young player?

Matt Rosa: It’s a mix of observing their natural ability to inspire and influence their peers, even in high-pressure situations. We look for players who don’t just excel in their role but also elevate their teammates. They have to be communicative, resilient, and willing to put the team’s needs above their own.

Interviewer: How much does a good family background contribute to these qualities?

Matt Rosa: It’s significant. A supportive and nurturing home environment often instills a sense of responsibility and accountability in the player. These are foundational qualities for any great leader. Plus, a player with a strong support system tends to handle the pressures and challenges of professional sports better.

Interviewer: Was there a particular moment when you realized this player was a must-have?

Matt Rosa: There were several, actually. From their performances in key matches to how they conducted themselves off the field. But what stood out was their reaction to a tough loss—they were the first to rally the team, focus on improvement, and maintain a positive outlook. That’s leadership.

Interviewer: Any final thoughts on what makes a great talent?

Matt Rosa: Beyond physical skills and statistics, it’s character and the intangibles. The right mindset, leadership qualities, and the influence of a solid family background—these elements create a player who can make a lasting impact.

Interviewer: Thanks for sharing your insights, Matt. We’re looking forward to seeing this player in action.

Matt Rosa: Absolutely, can’t wait for the season to start! Fark Carlton.

If Draper decides he wants to go play back in SA because a godfather offer comes his way.

Well we have a capable backup in Bryan.

That could trigger a 3rd first rounder next season depending on the big mans contract.

I think id prefer we kept him as we are a much better side with Draper in it.

But yeah if he goes all of a sudden we would really be loading up at a draft

I would not be moving out of that Melbourne draft pick next year considering the implosion that could happen in their club. It’s worth the gamble to see if they dump down the ladder and we get a very good pick out of it.

Has anyone heard of a young guy from Bendigo Pioneers called Taj Bond, a ruckman / forward who is training with Essendon at the moment. 6 '9" tall and apparently a gun?

No , tell me more I like the sound of it

  1. There is no official training at the moment
  2. Maybe we are looking at him for the VFL team
  3. He looks like he would give Christian Bock a run for his money in the bean pole stakes

Has the prerequisite basket ball back ground, however.

So you know of him?

Good luck to you Taj, I suggest staying away from Blitz

No, a quick google search told me that.

Melbourne’s 2025 1st Rd pick just became a lot more valuable.

Melbourne have been on a downward trajectory ever since their flag. I don’t see any reason to believe it’ll change next year, there are warning signs everywhere.

Few players profiles I’ve liked the look of around our picks in addition to Kako.

  • Thomas Sims / Kayle Gerreyn - Gerreyn the one likely to be available and I love his presence and potential to partner up with caddy as that powerful bustling lead up forward. Also has played some league footy out of WA as ruck so a good forward/ruck combo.

  • Hamish Davis / Jasper Alger - Incredibly athletic dynamic half forward options. Davis especially looks like he could be an absolute steal.

Joel Smith just got a 4 year ban for trafficking while he was playing, there are other players at Melbourne under the microscope.
Pert just pulled the pin.

Trac just gave an extremely underwhelming response to a question about their team culture
