The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

Agreed on Melbourne. They had a down year due to Petracca injury, Oliver was not on his game and admitted such post season, Lever was out injured and there were other important outs

There are too many top players in that team. All that’s going on now off field will probably be sorted come season proper

Melbourne will make the 8 easily IMO, and could push top 4 again

….

As for Essendon, I don’t think bottom 4 but won’t make the 8

Highly doubt that.

Don’t think they have the backbone as a team and a club now Speedy. Some good players but the cracks are widening. Top eight … at a pinch.

@noobermensch what’s your analysis on Gerreyn? I really like him as a late prospect with high upside

I just looked at the pick order to see who we could trade with to get back in with a pick in the 20s, and I see that R1 ends at pick 23, due to compensation picks inserted for Battle, Perryman and Cumming, and 2 assistance picks given to Norf. When bids come for Ashcroft, Lombard and Kako, that will push the first round out to 26 picks.
So night 2 will start with
Pick 27 (currently 24) Richmond
Pick 28 (currently 25) WBulldogs
Pick 29 (currently 26) WC
Next pick belonging to Brisbane will have been used to match on Ashcroft
Pick 30 (currently 28) Essendon - likely will have been traded so not sure who will be taking it
Pick 31 (currently 29) Pt Adelaide
Pick 32 (currently 30) Freo
Pick 33 (currently 31) Essendon - likely will have been traded so not sure who will be taking it
Pick 34 (currently 32) St Kilda
Pick 35 (currently 33) Hawthorn
Next pick belongs to Brisbane and will have been used to match on Ashcroft
Pick 36 (currently 35) WBulldogs

So let’s say my man Hannaford were to last to the second round, who could we trade up with?
Looks like a limited field to me. Who would want out of this draft and into 2025 without wanting a first rounder (eg might accept whatever we get for trading out 28 & 31)?
I don’t see one.

A club like Sydney with NGA kids coming next year (need points) or Richmond who may want to spread their picks out over 2 years would be the go.

If we can get a couple F2s (+ likely some change) for 28 & 31, we may be able to trade those F2s for a pick back in the top 25-30 this year.

That’s exactly the problem @nickers. Sydney and Richmond have no picks in the range likely to be of benefit. Richmond will have the first pick of rd 2 (currently 24) and they will either use it themselves, or will trade it to the highest bidder and receive considerable overs for it.
All the clubs in the range are unlikely to want to trade unless they were to get one of our 2025 firsts.

I heard someone mention on sen the other day how it’s in Richmonds best interests to spread their massive draft haul over 2 drafts as it will help them manage contracts in years to come.

Yep it’ll help avoid all these high draft picks hitting FA at the same time

Yeah, that’s the challenge for us. But if you offered say 2 x F2s for Sydney’s pick 22 (which will end up being around 25), points-wise that’s great for them but you’re right in that others may offer more.

9. Isaac Kako (Essendon match St Kilda’s bid)

Calder Cannons/Vic Metro
Forward, 176cm, 7/3/2006
Talent League stats (avg): 18.7 disposals, 1.7 goals, 7.7 score involvements
The Age’s August top 30: 12 October top 30: 6
Agility test: N/A 20m sprint: N/A 2km time trial: N/A

Will the Saints bid again? The Bombers might actually want them to, given they offloaded their in-demand No.9 selection to Melbourne during the trade period with a Kako bid in mind. Some rival clubs believe they should have waited until draft night to maximise the deal. Kako – who qualifies for Essendon’s NGA because his parents were born in Iraq – roared into top-10 contention with a sparkling under-18 championships where his goalkicking brilliance stood out. The pint-sized and elusive small forward has a knack for producing something out of nothing, and promises to be a fan favourite who will entertain Bomber fans for the next decade-plus.

35. Charlie West (Essendon)

Woodville-West Torrens/South Australia
Tall forward, 194cm, 1/2/2006
SANFL U18s stats (avg): 16.8 disposals, 6.4 marks, 1.9 goals
The Age’s August top 30: N/A October top 30: N/A
Agility test: 8.568 secs 20m sprint: 2.957 secs 2km time trial: 7:04 mins

The Bombers could do with another developing tall forward, and West is competitive, good overhead and very quick for someone of his height. Not everyone would pick him this high, and at this stage of the draft, everyone will have their flaws – as is the case with West, whose kicking and endurance are not a strength. Some recruiters would also like to see him work harder.

West sounds like a Dodoro pick.

Love Gerreyn. He’s the most skilled and coordinated of the tall contingent, can kick well on either foot. Has some of that Paddy Ryder type of smoothness to his game. Has shown an ability to take a big contested grab.

There are question marks over him. I would have liked to see him play more key forward than ruck as he’s “only” 199cm so unlikely to be a primary ruck at AFL level, but he ended up playing 70% ruck with rests in the forward line at Colts level so we didn’t get as much of a look at him as you’d like. Also, Colts is a super weak comp and he was able to just monster opponents. I’d have loved to see him play more senior WAFL, but he only got two WAFL games in and both were heavily rain effected. He also didn’t play for the AFL academy, and his performances for WA at the Champs were okay but not amazing.

They would all have new contracts in a couple of years anyway so I doubt they would all hit FA at the same time.

Isn’t it from how long they’ve been at the club?

FA comes up after 8 years at the club regardless. Players know well that FA can represent a big pay bump (Even if they stay at their club) and generally work to ensure their existing contracts will expire after that 8th year
