The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

I’m interested as to why you classify Davis as a not so small small forward. He seems to get a bunch of his possessions from marks etc, rather than “small forward” type traits. Kind of looks like an old fashioned utility to me?

You could call him a utility if you like. He’s 190cm and he is strong below his knees, plays a lot in the forward line and can crumb, dangerous when the ball hits the deck. But he does also get out on the lead and take a nice mark.

It’s a silly play by GWS. A few of those blokes won’t get regular game time and likely request trades as soon as their contract is up.

Would love Alger. Quality tough marking small forward. Has a decent defensive mindset also

Looks a bit like Toby Greene hovering around the packs in those highlights. Taller obviously but looks like he can get involved in most parts of the ground.

What’s the knock on him ?

Throw on top they lost a half back and mid and didn’t replace them then brought in stringer it seems like poor list management

dreaming. we’ll beg them to stay.

Blitz when he ends up at another club

From my perspective, he’s got nice traits but he’s more of a project than other small forwards. He was very quiet at times this year. He played in spurts.

He’s 182cm but more of a medium in his game, a marking first guy, not as strong at ground level as other small forwards but not terrible either. Loves to run and jump, either take marks on the lead or jump at a pack.

He’s only played well as a small forward really. He was pushed up higher at times and tried through the midfield and he was pretty lost.

He seemed to jump up draft boards in the wake of Kai Lohmann playing really well in the finals for Bris. Jasper could be a Lohmann type of forward.

Irrespective of his quality, do we think another small forward should be a priority? Or is he more than that? He looks to have some decent instincts, so would love to know how he might grow as a player

Hear these statements every year. How are we getting him for free in 2 yrs. Are we finishing last. These kids develop bonds with their team mates in their first 2 years and any link to teams they supported disappear. Where’s wardlaw’s trade demand? These things don’t happen unless its an interstate move back home.

Do we have any evidence Rosa is easier to deal with?

The Stringer deal extended into the final day, had GWS walk away from the deal, then we accepted what they were initially offering. Jackets would have been accused of holding trade week hostage.

I really hope we don’t get project/upside picks as we have sucked at developing those guys in the past.

3 competitive, driven guys with neat kicking skills whatever there position please.

Imagine we did what Mick Ablett said and kept 9, called St.Kildas bluff and didn’t match for Kako even though a small forward is a clear need and then he became the next Cyril Rioli.

The club would have to shut its doors.

He was real quiet and enjoyed puzzles.

It’s an interesting thought. I reckon there’s scope for an athletic freak with upside if we can find one. I have no idea who that is, but someone who could be a difference maker longer term works for me.

All the guys at these picks will have some areas that will need development, whether it’s body, tank, skills etc

The deal took that long because stringer had to decide to go there to start with and then the haggling was over them wanting us to pay a part of he’s salary.
Also a lot of those deals get held over to create drama for the broadcast otherwise what the hell are they going to show on tv if all the deals are done day one of a trade week

We’ll pick up two long term projects, then delist them after two years, and you will like it!

the alternative to not dealing 9 was holding it, using it and then having kako wipe out our 2nd round pick, leaving us with no picks before 70 and sending us into deficit next year which would have impacted our 1st pick.

i was annoyed that we didn’t hold our nerve and look to deal 9 on the day if necessary but on balance we’ve definitely ended up in a better position than if we’d actually just used 9 ourselves.

if disco hadn’t traded out our 3rd and 4th round picks already and instead looked to consolidate this year’s draft hand or we’d finished lower than 10th we probably would have had some other options. But on balance i think Rosa has played his hand as well as he could have in the circumstances.

we get kako, a chance to find a quality kid or two (jacques and davis both look interesting prospects - more robust and polished than classic disco flankers), and we can death ride the dees.
