The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

The club didn’t know during last years trade period that Kako would be available for us to bid on too. Probably would have kept more draft capital.

I really hope we get Tom Gross. Plays like it means something, never shirked a contest from the vision I saw.

Jack Ough looks like he could be a point of difference as well as that taller midfielder who could really come on as he develops physically.

Lachie Jaques - team of the year Coates, All Australian u18. Looks like a really nice intercepting defender. Slightly awkward kick but seems to mostly hit targets.

I hope we use our last pick on Riley Bice. Think his kicking out of the backline could be really useful to us.

I think the points Twomey and the panel made on AFL.com were very valid

  • the NGA rules changed in August. Whilst it did benefit Essendon, it caught them off guard and they weren’t able to prepare for it in advance.
  • if Essendon had kept pick 9, clubs were absolutely going to make them use it for Kako.

Worth pointing out that Ough played most of the year as a winger and has excellent traits for that role which makes him a nice versatile option.

The two outcomes would be something like:

Actual
2024
Kako
37
39
43
2025
ESS F 1st
Melb F 1st
F 2nd

Alternate
2024
Pick 9
Kako
Pick 85(ish)
2025
Ess F 1st
F 3rd(ish)

(I’m assuming we had to burn part of our future second to get the points for Kako, along with 28 and the Stringer pick)

So by delaying pick 9 my take is that we actually got MORE picks to fast track our rebuild, whereas taking 9 to the draft would have given us nothing in the middle of the 24 or 25 drafts.

We get 7 decent players over 2 years from this outcome compared to 3 if we’d taken pick 9 to the draft.

From those highlights, tell me I’m wrong but Clarke looks like a classic dump kick rebounding defender.

Not sure if it’s poor skill or lack of awareness but many of those highlights resulted in direct turnovers or kicks to contests in risky areas.

Not much. Avg a 1.3 goal a game.

Avg 11 disposals so could find the footy more.

December birthday so hasn’t turned 18 yet. His old man was my Assistant Principal in High School and he was a giant of a man and a gun local footballer.

See i think another small forward is an option. Probably states how little i rate our current crop. But Alger is 183cm and plays tall. So there is a point of difference.

When are we picking up Waylon Davey?

A small forward
Key Forward
Outside running Wing/HBF that can kick.
From what’s been said above by people with knowledge, some players still available would nicely fill these roles.

That’s not the way I saw it. There were two dump kicks under pressure when he didn’t really have any other option. A handful more long kicks to his teammates chest or to areas with a strong SA presence. There were also a handful of medium range kicks that came off. One really bad turnover when he tried to switch play and kicked it straight to an opponent.

that’s a fair point

Sounds like I need to buy a Melbourne membership.

Was Essendon member, GWS member (they tanked), now the trokia of ineptitude with Melbourne.

Basically only have Lav and Draper qualifying as Free Agents for 2025.
I’m not counting Setterfield or Goldstein because they’d bring nothing in. Really, neither would Lav. Draper will be interesting, but doesn’t sound like he wants to leave.

No not at all.

Wish we had two ashcrofts.

Apparently Bewicks kid is very good but still a couple of years away from draft age.

if mason fletcher doesnt make the nfl i wonder if he will consider playing footy again. was he any good?

Force us to trade it. If the dees or saints threatened a bid theres still 15 other clubs we could have live traded with.

Going by how hard up North were to get in at pick 25 for whitlock trading a future 1st it does seem unusual.

I guess though most clubs wouldnt change their trade plans to get us in on the back end like we got with the dees pre draft.

I thought the back end picks could have been sorted trading future seconds and thirds pre draft though. I mean thats how Melbourne got some of the capital to give us…

Ie we could have arranged kako points ourselves then the live trade could have been pick 9 for norths future 1st and a future 2nd.

So next year would have looked good for us too. If our hand was forced

Well he can kick. At least there wouldn’t be handballs in our defence gifting away goals.
