I am all for trading Dees future first for pick 28 and something else in return if we have our sights set on Shanahan or Whitlock.

I would also drive backwards instead of sitting in traffic just to feel like I am moving though. Potentially the same thing.

I’d consider bidding Malakai Champion and forcing West Coast to take him on their senior list or he sits on ours. He’s a decent small forward and he’d be a good options at this pick for us.

Would just need to be prepared for them to return the favour with Nguyen (Which may happen anyway)

Kako, Champion and Nguyen on our main list doesn’t look so bad.
We could also completely screw them and bid on him after they’ve already passed.
If the Eagles want him, they should just take him with their last active pick. Probably same deal with us for Nguyen.

Also in full fairness, only one of those picks was used to get Roberts (The 4th).
The future 3rd was used to trade up for the pick we used to take Lual.

It’s possible if we’d done neither trade we could have just taken Roberts with our initial pick (Which was 52 at the time we traded it) and kept both futures.

I’m probably more bullish than most on Lual though, so happy to have him.

There is definitely deficiencies with players in the 30’s and 40’s, but I’d prefer solid over upside.

I know it’s cherry picking, but to illustrate, would you prefer

Group A: Menzie, Durham and Roberts
Group B: Lual, A Davey and Jones

Ignoring Durham being clearly the best of that lot. At where our club is at I think Group A will be vastly superior.

• we never develop the upside guys, so the upside is redundant
• competitive nature flows through to game day pressure, competition for selection and better training
• players more likely to pick up the gameplan quickly(a key feature of top side)
• a better VFL side at a minimum, as having too many Davey, Lual, Wanganeen types in the VFl has hurt.
• a better second half of the year as you can bring competitive players in

Yes we need more top line talent, but that comes in the first round or traded in. Sometimes A grade players come later but often it’s just luck (Martin for us).

We need to build out a list of 30 players that all compete and all know the gameplan, that will help us way more than finding one diamond in the rough. Well unless we bite the bullet and rebuild chasing the top line talent.

Given that, would you take all 3 in the 20s and 40s, or just take 2 and go to the SSP period to work out the last?

I think the points Twomey and the panel made on AFL.com were very valid

• the NGA rules changed in August. Whilst it did benefit Essendon, it caught them off guard and they weren’t able to prepare for it in advance.
• if Essendon had kept pick 9, clubs were absolutely going to make them use it for Kako.

I guess though most clubs wouldnt change their trade plans to get us in on the back end like we got with the dees pre draft.

I thought the back end picks could have been sorted trading future seconds and thirds pre draft though. I mean thats how Melbourne got some of the capital to give us…

Ie we could have arranged kako points ourselves then the live trade could have been pick 9 for norths future 1st and a future 2nd.

We had ■■■■ all picks and would’ve meant trading out of 2025 to get picks which as evident would’ve required a premium. Trading pick 9 the way we did allowed us to cover both scenarios.

There’s nothing stopping them matching a bid if they pass. A team can’t pick again after passing, but they can match bids if they still have list spots. And the only way a team gets a chance to pass is if they have enough list spots open to choose not to fill one.

Edit: I remember this because it confused the hell out of me when it happened to us in 2020. We bid on Walker with pick 50, then Rioli with pick 51, then we passed, then when the dogs bid on Brand with pick 53, we matched the bid.

Just for a moment, imagine that Essendon did the deal that North did yesterday. The reaction on here has been bad enough when we’ve done good business this draft, Blitz would have crashed for sure.

I hate to say this Kako may not go as well as people hope on here. He can barely kick 40m and his passes are as loopy as tsatsas . I really hope he turns into a jet but these deficiencies may get shown up
