The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

Any insight on who is the most elite by foot in the draft?

Well, I think Finn O’Sullivan is a fair way ahead of the rest in that regard. The ruck/forward I mentioned earlier Kayle Gerreyn has elite foot skills on either side.

There are a lot of good kicks in this draft. Some like Smillie and Langford are elite in terms of kicking form, distance and penetration, but get a bit lazy on their kick at times. Xavier Lindsay is a good all round kick of the footy and pretty consistent.

Finn O’Sullivan though just makes the ball talk. Incredibly skillful kid.

Makes the ball talk… now that is what we need. Approximately where does Finn sit?

Probably pick 1

I respect your opinion…

But how many times are we going to go the midfielder well in the hopes that “a leader” magically lifts the standards and becomes the hero we need? Remember McGrath being that leader? In the last few years we’ve drafted Perkins, Hobbs, Tsatas all with first round picks. We have a stack of midfielders that can’t get a game. This has been tried and true method and has failed us and leaves us empty in all the other positions. There will be sugar hit midfielders next year to draft and every year after that.

This club BADLY needs actual small forwards and needs to actually investing into positions that actually kill us on field. Our small forward stocks are a genuine joke, worst in the league. We are literally playing the worst ranked player in the league as a small forward because we have nothing in the cupboard.

For me the options are draft Kako and hopefully Berry. Or draft Kako and Armstrong to partner Caddy. We have the worst, most unimaginative forwardline in the league.

Agreed. Think a quality rebounding defender will also help with our forwardline, through quicker more creative ball movement, and that it will release Martin.

Must be elite by foot

Worse forward line in the comp. I would just draft all forwards from our draft picks and hopefully a couple of them come good to partner Caddy.

Stringer - Gone
Langford - gone to ■■■■
Menzie - Always been ■■■■
ADJ - Lets not go there

Kako and sell the farm for Harley Reid. Trade Parish, Shiel and possibly Perkins.

I think I’ve already addressed all these points earlier in the thread. When I talk about drafting a leader, I’m not talking about drafting a nice private school boy who speaks well into a mic and who’s family is part of the right private members clubs (McGrath).

I’m also not saying that we should be drafting a midfielder. I said multiple times in fact that midfield is low on the positional priority list.

I’ve also never been stupid enough to suggest that we DON’T take Kako when he’s been gift wrapped and presented to us. I would have advocated picking him anyway, and this NGA change is mana from heaven.

What I said was… and I feel like I’ve repeated this already a bunch of times. I feel as though our most pressing list need is intense competitors. Guys that will demand higher standards from themselves and everyone around them. Guys that want the big moments and lift their teammates with their actions on field.

If that type of personality is also a strong positional need like a key forward or a rebounding defender then all the better. But if its someone like a Harvey Langford or a Xavier Lindsay… guys that will probably start their careers in the forward and back lines respectively but who may well end up as midfielders in the long run… I’d be weighting personality type higly among the list of desired criteria right now.

We’re desperate for the next group of youngsters that emerges to have a stronger character and a more intense competitive spirit.

yeah read the thread more C_B

I reckon if considering Lindsay we may as well go berry, coz he’s a very good kick that can kick goals too and would no doubt be able to go behind the ball if he fails as a forward or mid. I noticed he has good courage too for a guy at 180cm. People are gonna get sick of me suggesting a kako and berry double .

Noober’s insights have been great this year but I feel he’s starting to get the same questions over and over.
Is there a way we can pin some of his thoughts?

Its only just starting really with the last game next week, then this thread will ramp up through trade week and as we motor towards the draft. We’re all going to be repeating ourselves a lot.

I don’t mind it for the most part, I understand the game.

I’m too old(ish) and cranky to leave. I’ve reached the “old man yells at cloud” stage of my life.

This is a new account, I remember posting on old blitz back in the early 00s when it was still a normal web page with a forum bolted on.

A couple of rugby blokes who can tackle and knock a few oppo players around would be nice.
