The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

Are we a chance for Armstrong considering our slide?

I don’t think anyone really knows where Armstrong is going to land at this stage. There are teams in the top 10 that are thirsty for key forwards, and history suggests there are always one or two key forwards that go in the top 10.

He should be playing tomorrow for Sandy. He’s one that more eyes will be on than others. Many of the prospects have had a ton of exposure across all levels over the last two seasons. Armstrong is not one of those. He didn’t play Talent League last season. He’s only played a handful of league games this season and three champs games. There’s more left to play out with him, he has a lot of scope to go up or down the order depending on how he closes out the season.

Should the dees beat the pies next week, we’ll slide another spot down. Leaving us with pick 7.

No…we have to cut deeper I think and trade some players who are worth something but aren’t going to improve at Essendon without a good run in the first team.

Btw I’ve been a big Perkins fan. I included him because I think we need to trade players that are well liked as well, if we’re going to be able to get the balance we desperately need going forward.

Or draw

Only a few other comments that he had.

Wright the best kick for goal he had seen (as a junior) never hard but always flew. Confused at how this has disappeared… the flying not the kicking.

(Peak) Langford was what he expected as a baseline. Under performed vs his expectation a little, but mostly lack of consistency.

Laverde he rated much more highly hos career has been and thought could be a superstar mid but not close to that.

Not a lot beyond that. Considered Dodo to be much like Blitz views him… arrogant… not impressed

Felt the recruiting teams at Swans, Geelong and Hawthorn did a better job of drafting footballers instead of athletes.

I haven’t crunched the list numbers but I’m a big fan of throwing all of our eggs into the small forward basket.

  • Top 10 pick on Berry, even if it’s a reach
  • match bid on Kako
  • 1 year contract extensions for Wanganeen, J.Davey, A.Davey and get the whole club to dance to the injury-gods to allow these 3 to do BIG preseasons. The longer rookie rule change will help these boys.

Of course it would be nice to have another elite key forward to partner Caddy but our small forward situation needs to be fixed ASAP.

I’ve been on the Gerreyne train since your first video of him

We may not have a pressing need for midfielders but I’d argue we do for a mid like Josh Smillie and I’d be doing whatever possible to trade up to get him.

If battle goes to hawthorn then that will likely push us back 1 spot in the first round.

Does anyone have a firm view on someone lalor?

I’ve read that trainor can play forward.

Given he will be around our pick would, does he have enough runs on the board as a forward to select him as one?

Key defender is the last position we need.

He played WAFL seniors for the first time yesterday and his numbers weren’t great. Apparently it was basically a swimming pool over in the west though.

Not from what I’ve seen. I don’t get to watch APS games, but I’ve seen all his other games over the last two years and he’s only rotated forward a couple of times right at the end of games when his team is desperate for a goal.

Our recruitment team will have watched his APS games though, so if they’re confident to pick him as a forward then I’d back them to get it right.

The only way I’d consider a mid is if he’s strong (> 188 cm), quick, aggressive, runs both ways and an excellent kick…and I’d be happy for him to start as an HBF.

Will Hawthorn want BOTH Battle and Barass?

Supposedly they do

You’d think St Kilda and Melbourne.

Funnily, St Kilda seem to do better with King out injured. Sharman and Caminiti thrive and Membrey gets a go. I wouldn’t be horrified if we took Membrey as a UFA. After all, HBFUAAK. And it gives us a year or two.

And Melbourne would more than likely want to bolster their mids, particularly with Neil Bullen leaving, and Petracca might not return to his former self (or the Dees?).

Big Jobe sure has been impressive since pulling on the sash.
I didn’t think much of his under age season, but his VFL outings have been very solid
