I also agree with Deckham. He will continue to improve, but for me he is one of our first included players. He is exactly the type of player that personifies what and where we want to be. He is unrelenting. He runs, tackles and never surrenders. He’s good overhead, runs both ways and when the chips are down he is one player still cracking in. His skills are decent, and with our intentions regarding player development, I would have him on a wing and tell the rest of the team, “watch this guy and follow him!!”
First 46 games took him 6 years!!
Worth considering, IMO.
HBF A Davey
KPF Munkara - can play tall / third tall.
SF J Davey
any KPF we draft now will take years
just got Wedieman
but have VOSS, Jones, Baldwin, Eyre, McBride, Bryan developing
I wouldnt want to pick another kid just yet.
This aged well.
Putting a best 22 together is tough with this squad - not because we have too many good players, but because our squad is so unbalanced. Here’s my attempt which emphasises perhaps a little too much on getting games into high-potential players:
FB: Ridley Zerk Laverde
HB: McGrath Reid Redman
C: Martin Shiel Merrett
HF: Perkins Jones Langford
FF: A.Davey Wright, Stringer
Fol: Draper Hobbs Parish
I/C: D’Ambrosio Cox Caldwell Guelfi
My biggest takeaway is how log-jammed our forward line is with average/slow-paced, medium-sized players. I almost think our team balance might be better if we didn’t have to fit Stringer into the team.
The backline also seems a bit tall, but hopefully that would allow Ridley to take the least dangerous forward and focus more on his attacking game which fell off a cliff this year.
Hopefully a 5th interchange is added as I doubt Draper can solo ruck effectively yet.
So after all was said and done, did Francis and Phillips ever play together in the same team?
What are the chances that they will meet on opposite teams next year when Essendon play the Osama bin Chickens
So who’s the captain?
Not my choice but I am certain it will be Merrett
I would personally like Laverde or Redman.
Not seeing Hind, Snelling, Jones, Kelly in many best 22’s - even Heppell…
I agree - and would like to see something like;-
Ridley Zerk Reid
Redman Lav McGrath
Martin Caldwell Durham
Langford Stringer Merrett
Weideman 2MP Guelfi
Draper Hobbs Parish
Bench: Setterfield Shiel Perkins Cox
SUB: Heppell
FB- D’ambrosio, Zerk, Ridley
HB - McGrath, Reid, Redman
C- Shiel, Merrett, Martin
HF- Perkins, Weideman, Langford
FF - Stringer, 2MP, Tex
Followers - Draper, Setterfield, Parish
Int - Caldwell, A Davey, Lav, Hobbs.
Sub - Durham
Emg - Tippa, Jones, Cox
Hepp, Hind, Kelly, Stewart are next in line. All the emergencies are likely first 22 starters if fully fit.
Interesting side.
Very blue collar. I don’t hate it.
I don’t think we’ll ever field that 22, but I don’t hate it.
You could go even further and replace Reid with Stewart or Voss.
I tried to do a best22, and as usual it has about 30 people in it, and that’s before we’ve got pick4 and the Daveys. Very much looking forward to pre-season.
Shiel was probably our most exciting player in full flight in the 2nd half of the year. Like your side but I think he starts
FB: D’Ambrosia, Stewart, Ridley
HB: Laverde, Voss, Redman
C: Shiel, Hobbs, Martin
HF: Perkins, Jones , Stringer
FF: Tippa , Baldwin , Wright
R: Draper , Merrett , Parish
IC: Menzie, Caldwell, Setterfield, Mcrath
Voss to CHB
I like that set up .
Weids might be required as support for Drapes but I do like Baldwin at FF.
Got to fit Tippa in there again
B: McGrath Zerk-Thatcher Laverde
hb: Redman Ridley Merrett
c: Langford Stringer Martin
hf: Guelfi Jones Perkins
f: McDonald-Tipungwuti Wright Weideman
r: Draper Parish Setterfield
int: Caldwell, Shiel, Hobbs, Heppell
Sub: Wanganeen
Emg: Wanganeen, VOSS, Durham, Davey
Pushes Wanganeen out of 22.
A good preseason could put VOSS ahead of Jones or Weideman
If we free up a list spot for McKenna to come back then Heppell misses out.
That leaves in the VFL
B: Kelly McBride Reid
hb: Hind Eyre D’Ambrosio
c: Durham Snelling Lord
hf: Munkara VOSS Davey
f: Menzie Baldwin Stewart
r: Bryan Cox Wardlaw
int: Davey Phillips
Cox to swap with VOSS at CHF will make them endurance beasts
Snelling to swap with Alwyn Davey
Wardlaw to swap with D’Ambrosio
B: McGrath, Zerk, Kelly
HB: Redman, Reid, Ridley
C: Martin, Parish, Langford
HF: Perkins, Jones, Stringer
F: Tippa (/Menzie/Wanganeen), Wright, Guelfi
Foll: Draper, Merrett, Caldwell
Int: Lav, Shiel, Hobbs, Setterfield
Sub: Durham
Emer from: Cox, pick 4, Davey, Wanganeen, Menzie, Snelling, D’AM, Hind, Heppell, Weiderman, Baldwin, Voss, Bryan, Stewart
Always hard at the start of the year selecting from 40+ fit players which is never the reality. I’d love Hepps and Hind to miss the round 1 team but I’m sure the reality is that they’ll play.
