The Cricket Thread (part 11) - from The Champing

I doubt Webster comes back in unless Green breaks down. He has suffered by being in the squad and not getting another Shield match in. McSweeney will be the next middle order player in from outside the squad.

Ummm which leggie are you suggesting? Tanveer Sangha? Hardly a viable option I would have thought.

England have had a gruelling, punishing, overwhelming four weeks in Australia according to Stokes.

They’ve had -

1 x three-day game against the England (2nd or 3rd 11) Lions .

6 x days of Test cricket.

That’s it.

Be fair…

For a bunch of pasty soap-dodgers, nine days in 20+ degC is hard toil. And Archer is dragging 20 kg of pure gold around with him.

But when you tour Australia, you don’t just take on their cricket team, you take on the whole country.

You know, because they have no crowd support. And the media are so much more feral than the pristine British press.

smfh.

As I said the other day. They are stealing a living playing cricket part time while travelling around Australia in a pimped up backpacking excursion.

Slug got a game with Australia A this week, so not quite as bad as it may seem.

As he should be. Perhaps he could come in at 3 and push Marnus and Smith down a little to prolong their careers. I like McSweeney and I think his technique is best utilised at or near the top.

Rightly or wrongly the selectors see Green as our long term number 3 or 4

I think McSweeney will be the Smith replacement when he hangs up his bat

Look, i know it’s a thing of distant days and will never, ever happen again.

But prior to the first Test of 1989 (June 8th-13th) , the Australian touring party played (starting May 5)

2 x invitational 1 day matches.
2 x one day matches against Sussex and MCC
3 x three day first class County matches ( Worcester, Somerset, Middlesex)
1 x 1-day match (Yorkshire)
3 x 1 day internationals (England)
2 x three day first class county matches ( Warwickshire and Derby).

The Derby match ended June 6th. Thats 23 days played in the month leading into the first test.

Two days later we belted the proverbial out of them in Leeds. Very very fortunate not to be overprepared.

Then we got totally reckless and played two more first class county matches before the second Test. Disastrously, stupidly, we were burnt out and only won the second Test at Lords by six wickets.

Across the span of the next four tests (6th Test finish August 29. Topical observation - the late Robin Smith made 77no on the final day to deprive us of a 5-0 result ) , we played a further 10 tour games, most of them first class 3-day county matches.

Now, as i said at the top, you will never see anything like that again. The schedule is idiotically cramped. But to fly into australia , play 1 mickey mouse friendly against your own youth team and then front up to the first Test on a Perth wicket is absolute insanity. And to then have 13 days off, ignore the chance to send a few players out against a PM’s 11 , and claim you were overprepared !!!??? lmfao.

There’s a fair chance they completely implode, but I won’t be at all surprised if England actually start to improve later in the tour. And that would just reinforce the point.

Dean Jones scored 248 off 284 balls against Warwickshire. Talk about taking over-preperation to new levels!

Foolishness, wasn’t it?

In fairness , Tom Moody made 144no and must have been too mentally tired to play in the First test.

Warwick Todd was in vintage form that tour as well

He’s delusional. It’s madness. He’s a cult leader and the ECB have drunk the cool aid.

Mark Wood ruled out of the rest of the tour. Being sent home.

Is he injured?

Worse. Horrible case of overpreparedness, apparently.

Over prepared?

Too many rounds of golf?

Given he’s bowled 11 Test overs in the last 15 months, I am shocked by this. I don’t see how England can cover his absence.

Edit: Rather amusingly, those 11 overs were for match figures of 0/44 in a Test Australia won by…go on, guess…

Eight wickets.

Oh wait! That was this tour! He actually played?

Got it from Cashies after Dennis Allen pawned it to raise bail money.
