Pete Lalor on the Cricket Et Al says that the news he’s got from a reliable source in England is that the fight that Stokes and Atkinson were involved in spilled out onto the street outside the establishment where the incident first took place and that both Stokes and Atkinson were “worse for wear” afterwards. Suggestions are that Kiwi has been given 48 hours to resign as Pom captain but he is considering retiring altogether. Would be a fitting way for him to exit the game. Good riddance ■■■■!

Does anyone else get the sense that we (Australia) are about to enter a period of being a decidedly average cricket team? Especially in the white ball formats. I’m not sure what’s underneath and coming through is all that much chop.

Absolutely. You only have to look at the dearth of quality players in the Shield outside the current national teams. Guys like Marnus keep being played despite being hideously out of form because there are precious few putting selection pressure on him.

I’d rather we just kept sending Ollie Peake up instead of playing Marnus in limited overs cricket.

One thing Ollie Peake needs a lot of work on is his catching. Seems to drop a lot of catches both at fc level and already in these white ball games.
England captain Ben Stokes and teammate Gus Atkinson have been dropped from the squad for next week’s second Test against New Zealand at the Oval, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced overnight.
“The England & Wales Cricket Board can confirm that, given the ongoing investigation, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson have not been made available for selection for the Rothesay second Test against New Zealand, which starts at the Kia Oval on Wednesday 17 June,” said an ECB statement.
“Yorkshire batter Joe Root will lead the team as interim captain.”

The selection committee makes the same mistakes every ■■■■■■■ time. We keep players too long and then they all retire at once.

And now Hazlewood-Starc-Lyon-Cummins.
They need to make the hard call and get one of them to just focus on 1-2 formats and the others to focus on the other formats to bring the others through. Otherwise we will have 3 front line bowlers having played about 5 tests between them
Not to worry, we’ve got some youthful lads in Scott Boland and Michael Neser to come in and take over from a couple of the quicks.

its not a serious team, all the good players arne’t there, we are playing 2 keepers, Matt Short who barely gets a game at Victoria
Connolly opening…
Short plays every time for Vic and has played plenty for Aus.
Apart from Head and Marsh, who is missing from the normal white ball batting.
We are consistently trash overseas outside major tournaments.
The only thing that really matters though.
We could be the reverse like South Africa and win a ton of meaningless games and be the laughing stock at major tournaments
