A really good match, and a terrific innings there by Carey (to go with 10 catches). He deserved a century. But you just knew from the moment that sitter went down in the first over it would end badly for the Kiwis. When you’re the less talented and less experienced team, you absolutely must grasp your opportunities.
Australia ends the summer with a 6-1 record. But if it weren’t for opposition who can’t catch and Cummins’ extraordinary talismanic qualities, it could have been 4-3 or even 3-4.
We don’t play each other often enough, but they’ve had chances to defeat us, and when it’s been time to put the foot on the throat and be ruthless they haven’t followed through with it. There is a mental block there no doubt. It feels like Wile E. Coyote trying to catch the Roadrunner. They think they have us on toast and we find a way to escape.
He was very clearly the best performed individual for the series. He made a contribution in every innings, whether batting or bowling.
NZ will be shattered to have lost that match, but I’d say they should take a few positives out of the series. Ravindra is only 24 and looks to be a quality young player, Sears and O’Rourke look genuinely promising, both bowling with good pace and bounce, and Phillips could be a very handy addition at number 7. They were also hurt here by missing first XI regulars Conway and Jamieson. Their replacements, Young and Kuggeleijn, were pretty obviously NZ’s weak links.
Port Melbourne have got to be favourite to go back-to-back… despite the loss of many of our top players (one surprise late one to be announced shortly), I think we’ve replaced them well. Good backline, deeper but maybe not better midfield, a forward line more likely to score… let’s continue aiming for prelim final or better.
