I would of taken Silk as reserve bat.We saw in England what happens when you pick openers in the middle order. Cowan and Hughes were like fish out of water.
Im leaving Watto at 3 and Hughes at 6.So you would have picked Hughes for three and who else? This squad is not bad but most of them pick themselves, Inverarity is a ■■■■ IMO.Let's hear your squad for RSA.Inverarity is a ■■■■
Some of his decisions in the last 2 years have been embarassing, I get the feeling Boof has demanded more of a say in selection than what Arthur got
Remainder as is.
Hughes has some deficiencies but he is twice the player Marsh is. I dont have Hughes pigeon holed as an opener only
Hughes may struggle against the short ball and swing bowling, but that ain't nothing on his struggles against spin. Against Swann he had no idea, and on the tour of India it was embarrassing. Over a few Test he faced 100 consecutive balls without scoring against spin. He just had no way of getting off strike, and it was awful to watch. At least as opener he facing the quicks and can get some rhythm before the tweakers come on. It probably wouldn't matter as much against RSA, but the selectors need to think more than three Tests ahead - India are coming here next summer. Hughes is not a viable option for 6 in my opinion.

So your not worried about Hughes' woes against spin?
I said a few pages back that I wouldn't be surprised if they took Silk as the reserve bat. He has scored four tons in the last two Shield seasons, which is pretty impressive for a 21 year old. But doesn't he look awkward when he bats?
Personally I would have picked White and Doolan.
EDIT: It was 59 balls consecutive balls that Hughes faced against spin without scoring in India, including a run of four dismissals in 37 balls.

Hughes has worked hard on his batting against spin and yes I still worry about him but I think Marsh is far worse.
If Hughes is unlucky on figures how would you describe Marcus North's non selection? He leads the shield aggregate and averages, 593 at 98.83 with 3 hundreds and 2 fifties from 8 innings. Like Hughes, he has played unconvincingly at times in his career but he has a test average of 35 (with only 2 average padding not outs from 35 innings) with 5 centuries and 4 fifties. He's 34, so a mere kid compared to Rogers and he's actually a middle order player.

I thought Marsh looked pretty organised against the spinners. Or do you mean that Marsh is far worse as an overall package?

North has been playing as an opener for some time now.

I stand corrected and Cricinfo need to update their profile. Let's say he has 5 middle order test centuries instead. Can anyone else in the field match that? And he has a test century in SA in the middle order.

Yeh what happened to Eddie?

Like Hughes, it's going to be hard for North to get a gig unless Rogers falls over. Personally I would go with Hughes over North, only because he is nine years younger. If North was making those runs as a middle order bat, he would be going to South Africa. I share the selectors opinion that a distinction needs to be made between openers and middle-order batsmen.
Incidentally North's 5 test centuries involve 2 against England and 1 each against SA, India and NZ, so they're not against the minnows. That's a test century every 7 innings. He was still playing in the middle order in 2012 so it's not as if his residency in the middle order is ancient history.
One thing's for sure, he's not going so good luck to Doolan and/or Marsh.
I'm pretty sure North hasn't played Test cricket since he was dropped during the home Ashes series of 2010.

And he played on for longer than he should have as well.
I meant in the WA middle order in 2012.
Hughes cant play at 6. top three or nothing imo
and I dont think watson isnt a number 3. surely he goes to 6 now and marsh or doolan goes to 3

So is he or isn't he?
I miss Marcus North. Bring him in.
Or Cameron White
Just some whispers ive heard from people involved at SACA. After going back to the shield and peeling off 3 tons, including a double century in his first 4 games this year he has every right to feel disillusioned and then for Inverarity to say he wasnt selected because he is considered a top order batter only to bring in Marsh and Doolan is pretty poor IMO.Word from where?
Probably just needs a rest from the BBL so he can concentrate on our next shield game and keep churning out runs. From a selfish point of view im happy to have him at the Redbacks for rest of shield season, greatly improves our chances of winning it
