while we are busy tanking do you reckon we could try having our deepest forwards block for each other and lead at the ball carrier. Maybe while we are at it the players could move a little to provide options when bringing the ball out of defense.
I think my least favourite moment in that whole godawful game was the centre clearance that Howlett won early in the 3rd (might have been the 4th). First clear bit of ball that we’ve had for the game and he pumps it long to the top of the square which is exactly what you want to see. Saints managed to get three guys back competing against Daniher and they easily outmark him, we didn’t even manage to get an extra man into the contest, let alone a player front and square despite playing six on six in our forward line. So depressing.
Interesting that you bring that up because it stuck in my mind for two reasons. The first, as you pointed out above and the second, why was JD standing in the goal square - why didn’t he lead at Howlett?
Deers in the headlights.
Reactive instead of proactive.
Apparently the mounted archers of Ghengis Khan also fired when their horses were airborne mid stride.
That way they avoided the percussive effect of hoof strking the ground upsetting their aim. Makes sense.
I seriously hope you are all tongue in cheek with this. We haven’t suffered a wooden spoon since 1933 and I sure as hell don’t want to see one in my lifetime. I yelled myself hoarse at the “Bryce Gibbs Cup” and again later in the year when we beat Collingwood to avoid the spoon was just amazing relief. If we’re down there this year I will again be cheering for some late season heroics.

I’m mostly tongue in cheek. Also, I’m not sure we could tank hard enough to wooden spoon without getting found guilty of tanking anyway, which kind of defeats the point.

That draw against Carlton was the most hollow I’ve ever felt after a game, I felt absolute nothing.
Play a young quick side. In Laverde, Delgleish and Ashby for Dempsey, Stein and Gwilt for a start. In Browne for NOB also and probably Edwards for Melksham.
Like this, not sure why Hird would put a limit on the number of young players you can play…wouldn’t that be detrimental to developing a good culture in your young players. Besides Dalgleish, Browne, Ashby couldn’t do any worse than some of the senior players at the moment

This. Sheeds was good enough to get us a high draft pick without danger of the spoon. The AFL arseholes have wrecked our season so we can only take advantage of the situation as best we can - WITHOUT coming last.
It kind of feels like the whole club had agreed we over estimated ourselves and now we go hard to “refresh” the list. I think this is the right decision and actually removes a lot of the pressure on hird. If everyone is on the page then there is no concern for short term results.
I’m looking forward to going to the footy this week.
looking back I thought 2006 draft was meant to be a shallow one like this years? I know we missed Selwood but tops 3 were Gibbs, Gumby and Hansen. Gibbs is ok not great for a number 1 and Hansen is solid. Why is it every time we have a really early pick the draft is considered weak?

Fark that. If it means getting the best kid in the country I can live finishing last. Forget the foolish pride, whatever is best for the future.
