Tried again… don’t like it. People swear by it. Is there a specific version? Sometimes mono/stereo stuffs these old records.

I’m somewhere in the middle…I played it again a few days ago…there’s some really good stuff but I don’t see what Doggie does to rate it so highly.

Theres no mono version. Just stereo.

You got a wiim yeah? If you’re not digging the standard release via that, then I guess its not for you. But for me it remains the ultimate Heavy Psychedlic Underwater Sci Fi Delta Blues Adventure

I have 3 versions on tidal; 50th anniversary and then the diff between the other 2 is some bonus video. I think they’re the same quality.
I will trial again.

You can just get rid of it; it was kind of a placeholder

As far as records go the 50th is the best as its mastered by Bernie Grundman. But Ive heard the digital release was messed with after he did hos thing.

Dont force it brother. If it aint your thing, it aint yoir thing. It is my favourite record of all time but even I’ll admit its not perfect. Burning of the Midnight Lamp should never have been put on it ( was a single from 67) and Noel Reddings song being allowed on it was nothing short of a nicety from Jimi.

But the title track: what else sounds like that? And what else has sounded like it since. Its so unique.

Voodoo Chile: Not the Slight Return…at the time, Cream were considered the heaviest blues act. This is Heavy Deep Blues.

Tracks like Crosstown Traffic, Long Hot Summer Night and Gypsy Eyes…just great little late 60s rock numbers.

Come On Let The Good Times Roll: This fucken cooks…three guys in a studio ripping it up…amp buzz and all.

The entire Rainy Day/1983 suite (side 3): …oh man. Starts out as a jazz funk vamp, turns into an underwater space odyssey about the nuclear destruction of the planet, that takes the listener to the bottom of the ocean and back to the top again.

Side 4 opens up with Still Dreaming: We’re back at the Soul Jazz Funk of Rainy Day with Jimi literally talking to us with his strat and his wah pedal. Into House Burning Down, not my favourite but cool.

…then All along The Watchtower…yeah its been over played, but for a reason. Its incredible. It soars. Its another journey. But this time on land. Its about a mission or someting. Its important. But its not clear why. If the album ended there one would be satisfied because its a great finish…but it doesnt…it gets better…

Voodoo Child Slight Return: Where the Delta meets Saturn. Equal parts Earth and Space. The heaviest blues of all. Powerful. The ultimate finish. The most heartbreaking thing about this song is it was filmed by the American ABC tv crew. In the studio. Being written. On the spot. Live…footage has been lost since 1970. That footage is deemed by many as the Hendrix Holy Grail. Hopefully it may turn up oneday.

I didn’t intend this to be a total review or breakdown of the album. But these are the reason why I love it so much. Jimi is my favourite artist. He has been since i was 14. Electric Ladyland is his most expansive and free album out of his three studio releases. It breaks my heart thats all we got out of such a talented young man.

Man looking through some of my old blues and rock playlists I realised how influential and saturated late 60s and 70s was on my musical tastes. To the point where I don’t even recognise the band, song title or album artwork.
Oddity, country Joe and the fish live at Fillmore west 1969. Wasn’t released until the 90s but what a set. Donovan’s reef jam 38 minutes of bliss!
Gimme a time machine and take me to the Fillmore late 60s

One of the things that runs threw most, if not all Fillmore show recordings is how good they sound. That joint musta been acoustically gifted.

And yet at the same time eerily quiet. Crowds must of been really accommodating to not be obtrusive and ruin the recording.

There’s a reason so many live albums were recorded there. At both of them.

Let me just post this then I’ll leave the entire subject alone…

Im not trying to sell it (as an album). If it aint your bag, it aint your bag. But I know you play guitar. So from a players perspective listen to this…

Jimi demoing Electric Ladyland at the Record Plant in 1968. Just Jimi, a strat and probably a twin or a princeton with a touch of tremolo dialed in. Only goes for a minute and a half. But its a minute and a half of an orchestral psychedlic soul masterclass executed by the biggest set of hands on a five ten frame Mother Nature ever spat out.

It has its own sense of time that goes beyond mere syncopation. Its kinda like Curtis Mayfield…but like way more.

One can not like Hendrix, thats easy. But one can not simply dismiss the beauty and grace in which he effortlessly executes this meticulously constructed piece of music.

Fucken majestic.

Best part of the album.
Reading about the album made me appreciate it a bit more. I think another album or two and he would have absolutely nailed it.
I think it all comes down to the panning that gets under my skin. Maybe if I wasn’t sober… will play again when I ride the tortoise across the galaxy.
