I’m less than a year in and I’m pretty impressed with where I have got.
Key notes from me:
Fingers will be sore for your first few months so look into thinner strings. I found a big difference between 12 gauge and 11 gauge. Recommend going thinner as soon as you can.
Plenty of YouTube guitar teachers to learn from. Find the people that are fun because it should be a fun experience.
Learn your major and minor chords and some 7th chords in that order, sometimes a 7th is easier to play and it will be refreshing to the ear. Once you get a hang of them start playing them without your index finger if your intention is to play barre chords down the track. F chord took me a good 2-3 months for example.
Learning chords, it’s more about what you do before planting your fingers down. Need to get your arm and fingers into position. So slow changes between two chords and landing on them as accurately as you can.
Strumming can be something that takes time if your totally concentrating on your fretting hand so I’d recommend muting the strings with your fretting hand and learning how to strum and strumming patterns while muting the strings. Right and left hand should be practiced individually. Splitting practice into thirds - left hand, right hand and then together.
Some stuff takes less than a week, somethings can takes months to learn. Don’t be afraid to watch advanced stuff early because it may be something that takes a while to comprehend anyway and by that time you may be ready to pick it up.
Lastly I found that it’s hard to see gradual progress but one day it will all click. So you might not think your improving but then at the end of the week or month it comes together. Don’t get down on yourself you will eventually be rewarded for putting in the time.

If you only play boutique valve amps, probably not for you. But if you just jam occasionally and want a little device which sounds pretty good and doesn’t wake the neighbours, it’s excellent
Couple of recent purchases. I’m aiming for an authentic tube amp sound when DI’ing into my DAW. I’ve used a few amp sims (s-gear is pretty good for cleans IMO), but the Kingsley has more ‘air’ and chime being an actual tube preamp. From the Kingsley, I’m running into Two Notes Torpedo cab sim sw - their Greatsch 2*12 suits me best so far. Still looking for a decent power amp sim - any tips?

Art by Klaus Voorman of Revolver fame. This works best as an o/d in front of the Kingsley. Not great as an amp-in-a-box in its own right IMO.

Try Line 6 Helix Native
I have the Helix Floor and native as well. Takes a little tweaking (as they usually do), but it is VERRRRRY good.
Used to have Torpedo Live rack unit. Let that go once I got the Helix but loved it.
Slightly off topic, but I just paid $30 for a year’s subscription to Ultimate Guitar. Fantastic learning tool. It makes me happy I decided to get back into music

Ive got a powerful lust for a fender brownface amp. They do a couple at pretty good prices.
I like Ultimate Guitar. Been using it for years. I’m not quite up to speed with the vast proliferation of guitar apps now out there but I’ve found it a solid tool.

Some random gear pics; my Japanese Jazzmaster that I frankensteined with some humbuckers and a mastery bridge that I got from the states. It has a massive sound and is less delicate than it was in its original form (I found the tone to be really bright and difficult to control, should of just bought a Gibson I guess.) The other is what I consider closest to having a child, Rickenbacker 330 bought at Truetone Music on Santa Monica Blvd (Johnny Marr of Smiths fame was in the shop at the time) and then my beat up old Roland Jazz Chorus 120. This amp has seen better days but is still capable of making me sound like i’m actually good at guitar. Such a beautiful warm sound.
Picked up a Laney GH100L for 500 and a case of beer during lock down. It was missing a couple of knobs so I replaced the lot of them for about $10. Sounds great.
My son who dropped out of school a few years ago did work experience at Maton this week. They offered him a full time job today. Super stoked for him.

I’ll let him know. I’m not exactly sure what he’s doing. He’s been setting up guitars, installing machine heads and something that he signs his name on. Worked on a guitar that some bloke will be playing at the GABBA.
Sounds like he’s winding pickups. I’ve got a set in my 501 signed by my mate that winds all of Josh Homme’s in his Matons.
Does anyone have any experience in using bluetooth headphones with an amp. I just bought a beautiful pair of Audio-technica headphones, though I’ve already got a wired pair. If I buy a transmitter will it actually sound any good, or will there be a massive delay? I didn’t think about this, before I bought them because silly.
