The Humble fish and chippery

The Fish and chippery closest me is probably the best out the 5 within a 10 minute travel distance between them. Their flake takes up the whole length of a large dinner plate and is a thick fillet and not covered in that much batter it becomes encased in a carboard like consistency when fried.

Hands down the best Onion Rings. I since learnt if you ask for home made ones, you dont get the pre cut and crumbed rubbish. Also you get double the amount as they use the whole onion worth for $2.00 pricey I know, considering you only get 5 for $2 on the pre packaged rubbish.

Their chips are hit and miss depending on who they have frying them up as sometimes they can non crispy and left a bit soggy. deal for 2 (2x flake, potato cake, dim sims and medium chips) for $16 cant go wrong.

Also WTF is with some places now going, small, medium, large chips… what happened to the $3 minimum etc?

Tell me about it…Since that original post, I’ve moved from that area, bought a house in Geelong and found a new excellent fish and chips joint in that time!

Ricky’s Fish and Chips in East Geelong btw…under new management yet still excellent. Now the year long wait for a ā€œ2nd itā€ begins!

Always thought tjey were called a Battered Sav. This is also slang for sex on beach

My local has minimum chips for $3 and half minimum (!!) for $2.

Thanks for that, Jeansy.

What’s the name of it? I only get down there every 2 or 3 years.

Forget it. Went there tonight and the new owners…as they always, without fail do…F@rked it up. Prices gone up, portions reduced, cash only now and the whole thing was greasier than the Carlton fc family day. That’s with 2 weeks of my last post…wtf!

Why do people buy a well run and successful business to think they know best how to run it. They do know they are purchasing the name. goodwill and customer base…not just the building and equipment right?

Looks like the hunt for a new f&c joint begins…

Superb.

I remember an old observation of Rob Sitch’s - that eating fish and chips is a bit like watching the oscars. When you sit down to start it’s all ā€œoh boy here we goā€ but by time you’re on your 3rd potato cake (or watching the award for best cinematography in a foreign language documentary) you’re massively regretting your initial decision!

Happens with most businesses, new owner cuts costs to try and get back the money they paid for it instead of taking the long term view.

Good thick crumbed calamari rings.
Pick your own fresh fillet of top fish.(John dory/barra)
Crisp hot chips.
Dimmies
Corn jacks
Salt and vinegar
Good quality tassie scallops
Good quality homemade tartar sauce in big container.(none of that Masterfoods shit)
Ample fresh lemon slices
Chiko rolls
Can of ice cold solo.
Decent Greek salad.

Think that about covers it.

Get my burger from a milkbar or a pub.

I love the humble fish and chips. But I have one steadfast rule when I comes to me choosing and it seems to rain true.

If said shop is more than 20kms from an Ocean (I know they don’t fish them out themselves) it’s likley sub par.

I’ve never tasted a decent fish and chip shop inland, all the country towns I’ve lived in had terrible, border line salmonella riddled options. Best for me have always been the ones close to the beach. I know it’s probably in my head.

Exception to that rule is if the inland shop sells fresh fish separate to fish and chips. Good example of this is ā€œLet’s eat fishā€ on Glenferrie road Hathorn.

Fark that country town Hawthorn.

Sotos in Semaphore has changed hands.

The retiring owner had the shop for about 400 years and would have sold it for a squillion. Place is a license to print money during the summer.

Have been three times since it changed hands, can’t go again.

The product didn’t diminish significantly in quality, but they ā€œmodernisedā€ immediately: Eftpos machine, fancy point of sale system, printed queue tickets as opposed to the old laminated numbers, and a hundred aussies behind the counter… No greeks.

It ain’t the same and the end of an era.

The one nearest me is Flippin’ Fish and Chippery in Napier St Essendon. Their souvas are pretty good but not a massive fan of their fish to be honest. Speaking on license to print money, Hunky Dory Fish and Chips in Pratt St Moonee Ponds is heaving every time I go past there. Lunchtime or of an evening it is packed with people eating in. They do the traditional stuff but also the more health-conscious options, which is probably why it is so popular…

Ahhh, captured the wanker market.

It’s booming.

The fish punts on Constitution Dock are pretty good most of the time.

Our F&C in pakenham gets his from the markets in South Melbourne… ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  good too.

I was saying to a local here that it’s a pity there are no good vendors of fresh fish here, funny it being a port, and the local told me all seafood has to go to Melbourne first. Portland cops it too, so I was told.

I assumed it had to do with checking for size and catch limits, but it still sounds, ahem, fishy to me.
