The Local Ground

Saw about 15 mins after half time of Douttas v Abers and that was enough for me. Abers were miles in front at that time and the standard was pretty bad with the wind.

Drove down the road to see Marby v Airport West and was confronted by what seemed to be a 7 goal wind blowing to the Moonee Ponds end. At 3/4 time Marby were 5 goals in front. One of the AW players had a shot on the siren from about 35m out and failed to make the goal square. After seeing that you knew that a 5 goal lead wasn't enough.

AW came out firing in the last 1/4 and managed to bang on 8 to win by 15 points. Marby now in huge danger of the drop.

In other matches, Avondale beat an improving Greenvale to retain their unbeaten streak. Keilor too good for Northern and Strathmore too good for Pascoe Vale.

Some massive games this week with the top 4 and bottom 4 all playing each other.

Northern v Marby: If Saints win they are just about safe for the year. A Marby win really opens up the relegation fight.
Abers v Avondale Heights: Abers are getting some players back but I am still not overly convinced.
Airport West v Greenvale: 5th v 6th. A loss for either means making finals will be extremely difficult.
Strathmore v Keilor: This should be a great match. Strathmore win and they almost cement top 2. Keilor win and they come into flag contention again.
Douttas v Pascoe Vale: A loss for PV will see them drop to 10th and with a bad % means they are in huge relegation trouble. A win will mean they are 3 games clear of Douttas and reasonably safe.

Anyone know if Tom Hislop is still playing? His two brothers are still both at Abers.

Pretty sure he is no longer playing - not sure what happened there.

GET CUT WITH TOM HISLOP

Aberfeldie smashed Avondale Heights for their first loss of the year. Reimers 6 and Johns 5. Mark Blake best.

Northern Saints and Marby draw.

Doutta 2 points over Pascoe Vale.

Strathmore over Keilor and Airport West over Greenvale - both 2-3 goals.

4 teams - Doutta, Northern, Marby and Pascoe Vale fighting off relegation.

Heard tom  hislop was going to miss season with injury before the season started.

edit :tom apparantly played reserves last week

Great win by Douttas coming back from around 5 goals down at 3/4 time albeit with a 4-5 goal wind. Unfortunately the draw between Saints and Marby still leaves them on the bottom.

Abers must have really turned the corner to give AH such a touch up. It helps that Reimers and Johns hit their straps but I confess I didn't see that coming. Abers looking like the real deal now.

You would think thats almost it for Greenvale and their finals chances. AW are a good side though and can beat anyone on their day.

Strathmore really going along strong. Haven't done anything wrong for a month now.

Essendon Player Watch

I mentioned Aaron Sweet from AW a few weeks ago and I note that he has been in the best players almost every week. He is defintely worth a look.

Saw a big ruckman from PV yesterday by the name of Michael Sikora. I believe he is on our supplementary list. He is a mountain of a man at 206cm and 108kgs. Absoloutly dominated yesterday with his marking around the ground. Seems to have a decent footy brain and a good engine. EFC should keep a close eye on him as he is only 25 and most rucks start coming good between 25 and 30.

One of our WA guys had the hots for Aaron Sweet when he was draftable.

I think Sikora played for our seconds last year. And I think he's had time at Sandringham.

Upsets galore in the Ammos.

We start in Premier.

Old Brighton and St. Bedes Mentone, fighting relegation, had good wins over Beaumaris and De La Salle, opening Premier's relegation battle wide. 7 weeks left and 2 wins separate Old Scotch (4th), Beaumaris (5th), Collegians (6th), Old Xaverians (7th), De La Salle (8th), St. Bedes Mentone (9th) and Old Brighton (10th).

In Premier B, Mazenod (8th) beat the flying University Blues (1st with a record of 10-1 coming in) by a point!

Premier C tightens with Hampton Rovers beating Marcellin and Peninsula beating PEGS.

Glen Eira (Division 2), for the first time in 2 years win their first match, over Elsternwick.

South Districts stop Old Paradians in their tracks.

Division 3 saw Albert Park beat the Northern Blues (9th beating 2nd!),

At Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday, the AFL Victoria Communtiy Cup will be on between a combined team of Metropolitan Melbourne players and the best players from Country Victoria. The match was due to be played at Simonds Stadium as a curtain raiser to the VFL clash between Geelong and Richmond. 2.15pm start. $10 entry.

VAFA Squads to be published before the weekend.

Sikora was our reserves ruckman most of the last season...wasnt good enough

VCFL beat the VAFA in the senior and Under 19's matches, whilst the Vic Metro combined side held out the Country boys

Spotted at AJAX v St. Kevins on Saturday - Bryan Wood. Son Nick plays at SKOBS.

Interesting games in the EDFL this week after some big upsets over the split round.

Saints vs Avondale

2 weeks ago you would have said this was a 50 point win to AH but after losing two in a row nothing is certain. Northern did beat Abers on their home deck not so long ago. AH should win by 30.

Airport West vs Abers

Match of the round. AW are flying touching up Avondale Heights by 6 goals last week. Whoever loses this goes out of the top 4 and for AW they would basically be 2 games out considering their poor percentage. Abers loss to Pascoe Vale last week would have stung. I'm going for AW here in a tight one.

Strathmore v Greenvale

Right now Strathmore are the best side in the comp but Greenvale are coming and are coming hard. The Mores have a chance to almost end Greenvales finals hopes. Have to go for Strathmore at home but it will be a tight one.

Douttas v Marby

Relegation match. A win for Marby will almost see them safe for the year and a win for Douttas will see them leap to 3rd bottom (assuming Northern lose). A lot to like about Douttas and their fighting spirit this year. They play well at home and I think they will win. This match will be a cracker.

Pascoe Vale v Keilor

PV are a hard to assess. They can be world beaters one week and then shocking the next. If Vezpremi and Sherman are in the best players then they are capable of knocking over any team. By the same token Keilor are very consistent and you would think they should win here in a close one.

AH beat Saints by 8 points...Rose and Galea 10 between them.

Abers comfortably over AW...Reimers 2, doesn't look as if Darcy D is playing. Marcus Kenny didn't play for AW.

Strathmore inaccurate but reasonably close agst Greenvale.

Doutta over Marby

Keilor comfortably over PV

There's a Paul Medhurst playing for Marby...would have played with Brodie Holland at Freo and Pies.

Tom Hislop playing for Abers.

ex-Pie Luke Rounds at Doutta.

Justin Sherman at PV

Few Essendon seconds playing locally this weekend - Tippa!, Toy, Heppell, Thompson

Jedd Clothier the only guy with an Anglo name playing for Northern.

Finals look just about set now with 4 rounds remaining.

The only way things can change is if:

  • Airport West win 2 more games than Abers
  • Greenvale win 3 more games than Abers.

Abers draw is: Keilor (h), Saints (a), Marby (h), Strathmore (a)

AW draw is: Saints (h), Strathmore (a), Douttas (h), PV (a)

Greenvale draw is: Douttas (h), PV (a), Keilor (h), Marby (a)

Abers should win at least 2 but I can't see AW beating Strathmore at home.

At the bottom end, it is a battle between Marby, Douttas and Nothern Saints. Big game this week for Marby against PV at home. If they lose they're in huge trouble. If they win then the last game of the year between Douttas and Northern becomes a blockbuster !!!

Upsets everywhere again in the Ammos.

In Premier alone there were upsets at St. Bernards and Trinity Grammar, as the struggling Old Xaverians and mid-table Collegians proved too strong. Old Brighton's win over fellow cellar dwellers St. Bedes Mentone has made the top flight interesting.

The ladder in Premier sees:

University Blacks 44

St. Bernards 40

Old Trinity 32

Old Scotch 28

-----------------------------

Collegians 28

Old Xaverians 24

Beaumaris 20

Old Brighton 16

De La Salle 16

St. Bedes Mentone 12

5 weeks to go and lots of possibilities.

Premier B this week has seen this ladder as a result with a month to go:

University Blues 48

Old Carey 40

St. Kevins 32

Old Melburnians 28

------------------------------

Mazenod 28

AJAX 28

Fitzroy 26

Caulfield 24

Old Haileybury 14

Old Ivanhoe 12

Big match this week is at the Uni with the Blues hosting Carey.

Interesting addition to the umpiring ranks in the VAFA this year.

Played for Hawthorn and St. Kilda in the 1980s and 1990s.

Called football for Channel 7 in the 1990s, in boundary riding, special comments and commentary roles.

Has coached local football over the last decade.

And can now be found in the lower grades of the Ammos.
