All teams do it every year. It’s standard. This doesn’t mean they don’t swap players and positions during match drills.
Inevitably many people wont be happy with him, by this time next year.
I garruntee the same sh*t will be said:
“There’s no game plan”
“He’s not making a statement at selection”
“There’s no plan B”
“Just give (player X) 4 weeks in the seniors to show something without dropping him”
That’s what coaching a young team is. He will inevitable make mistakes and have some calls that most people wont like.
But Something he just cannot do, is put all his faith in the senior players to stand up and show the way. They can’t and wont. Don’t even try.

While you’re down there luv
Not 80-90% of the time they don’t. I get that they’ve wanted to create “synergy” but how’s that worked
Cox and Perkins showed a bit in year 1. Does anyone think that our new coaches could get them back on track ? Or are they a lost cause ?
The latter. We have wasted years on these two, clear them out and try again with new blood.
Cox I think has just lost too much with (basically) 3.5 years out. He would’ve been amongst the first round of cuts for mine.
Perkins - 10-1 shot, but maybe? Every 6 or 8 games he shows up. I could stomach him getting 1 more year.
Lot of senior players didn’t even try.

Absolutely, imagine only knowing an AFL career under Rutten and Scott, playing in a team with f/all leadership and a club with zero development.
I would give anyone another shot under the new regime.
Solly ?
Both have played plenty under 3 or 4 different VFL coaches, too.
Admittedly I haven’t heard as much of him as Spike but Graham is a little underwhelming so far IMO.
Looks like we may have to up the offers to Mzungu and Daly to give Spike genuine support
The greatest gift Scott can have left Mcveigh is if he ends up being correct on the list ‘that the hard work has already been done’ in the drafting.
It is about a 1% chance of being true.
Apparently one of the things that shocked Spike when he arrived was the state of the men’s locker room at the Hanger. Said it was disgraceful. Was not happy and called the players in from their break and told them to clean it up. Wants standards lifted from the ground up.
good anecdote. i like that he’s not even waiting for day one of preseason to make the point.
If true, this pleases me.
Firstly, because this seems like low-hanging fruit which can start lifting standards across the board. Secondly, because they are all adults and there is no excuse for that.
Ben McKay left chip packets everywhere. Parish had his golf clubs strewn across the place and Rids threw all his Elastoplast tape on the ground. Pretty ordinary. Enough to move them on I reckon.
Ben McKay left chip packets everywhere.
Hey, he was trying to put them in the bin. His rubbish depositing skills are just like his handballing.
I really, really hope this is true, but discipline being enforced at Essendon is almost too good to be true
