I don’t know whether McVeigh is the guy or not. I suspect not but let’s judge that in three years.
What i do know is that this decision did take some stones. Welsh and the club knew most people wanted them to appoint Hird. That would have been the easy choice. Most here thought it was a fait accompli.
However rather than appeasing the fans and the coteries, the club have stood firm and picked another candidate who they think is actually the best person for the job.
Maybe there’s jobs for the boys involved, maybe there isn’t, but the decision is brave nonetheless.

As the process went on, I was warming to Graham and Davis for the role. Both have the experience and success at club level to coach our group. But I guess McVeigh is better when it comes to instilling Essendon Culture than those two; that’s the only separation point I can glean.
Spike had better speak well during his presser, that’s going to carry a lot of weight with fans.

I actually think there might be an element of truth to it.
We have seen how well the Hird cultists have taken this news, imagine the reaction if the club had announced right from the start that he wouldn’t be part of the process. It’s all about optics with this club.

They didn’t string Hird along.
After his declaration stunt at the start when he hadn’t spoke to Welsh first it was quickly reported that Welsh and Hird spoke and welsh offered to find him another role at the club. Been consistently reported throughout that there might be other roles for him.
If you apply for a role and the boss says basically you’re free to apply but I want you in another role, read the tealeaves. It’s pretty obvious your not preferred in that situation. Hird knew from day 1 he wasn’t preferred but applied anyway.
