The new Essendon Coach [spec]

por que no los dos?

I hope we’re not considering him after he left with no warning and too late to get a proper replacement.

I agree with that but I also think business is business. If he’s a good candidate we should consider, he’s not one of the main reasons our club is a dumpster fire (although as a former assistant he obviously is involved)

Brad Scott coached for 14 years and I’m still not convinced he can coach AFL.

Post playing he assistant coached St Kilda (did nothing), Werribee (did nothing), Centrals in SA (flag 1 year, minor premiers & beaten GF the next), back to Port in AFL for 2 years (minor premiers then won flag).

So again what I’d call a fairly solid resume - different comps, top level & state league, won flags.

{ As a general point… yes it’s team sport, spheres of influence vs control etc etc but also it’s a competitive industry. Success is kinda what it’s about. }

2 back to back prelims is a strong indication he could coach AFL, but it was no guarantee he could go around again. Solid resume’s like Cox and Carr are no guarantee either, just perceived risk mitigation.

Playing good footy is. Teams need some luck and the best available list too.

I like listening to the way Horse speaks. To me he gave a bloody good public audition dissecting Geelong on 360 the other night. Ie what he said C Scott would be looking at in review.

His dissection of an Essendon game would be riveting.

Do not care less about a ā€œprocessā€. Selections by committee are boring and safe, and result in people like Brad Scott getting the nod.

If Longmire is available, you get him. He is clearly the most credentialed candidate out there. If Longmire is a no and Hird is your man, lock him down.

The whole formal process with committees is more about PR and looking professional. Don’t be spooked by media criticism of your method. And please don’t out source the biggest appointment the club can make to outsiders.

Sign me up for that our players need a whole heap of honest feedback

It was one of the more in depth bits of coaching knowledge I have seen any one do on tv.

Normally it’s this guy needs to push up here or this guy doesn’t do this, but he broke that bit of play down five moves ahead of what actually happened.

our bunch of sooks will love that

Geelong’s culture is very big on ā€˜brutal feedback’. it goes all the way back to the Bomber era. Where you had blokes like Scarlett, Chapman, Kelly, Mooney, Johnson and Rooke… who’d be giving teammates an absolute bake if they dropped their standards.

Apparently it was one thing that Ablett really struggled with early on, as he’d always been held up as a superstar and son of Garry Snr.

I think we have the right kids who are very honest about performances, and where the club is at. Where our older guys are extremely fragile, which has been a recruitment issue and a club culture issue.

Who really knows about Longmire…

But if he puts his hand up and is available, it’s going to be an easy decision. But don’t rule out Carlton.

If they can package Hird in in some way (Senior Assistant or whatever), most should be appeased. But if it’s Longmire, he should have full say in who is working with him.

Best public advertisement of I know what the ā– ā– ā– ā–  I’m doing I’ve seen in a while.

Lyon look stoked he had just picked up the last bit.

Kinda turned me from the getting a young coach crowd a little.
