The Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP)

Hard to see them go past Edwards.

Hoare out of the conversation I reckon. He’d have played today if in the mix.

Baldwin extremely unlucky.

Edwards couldn’t have done much more than he did today with 4 goals in a half.

Personally, I wish we’d delisted laverde instead of Baldwin but it is what it is

Not typical of Rosa though.

Take the goal kicker, at the least he is a solid vfl performer.

How does it work? Can I be eating breakfast this morning and have to spit out my coffee reading how Hawthorn signed Edwards last night? Do we get first crack?

Surely we get first right of refusal

Ok watched the highlights again this morning- anyone notice how Edwards absolutely burnt Perkins for his first goal? And what the hell was Gardiner doing running in the opposite direction to Edwards.

Next two goals were from good marks. Kudos.

Last one was a nice snap from a handball receive. Again, his defender no where in sight.

No other real involvement in the game.

Im going to go on record and say that im just not convinced. I thought he was 19 but hes 25. Its a no from me sorry

i think they will go with baldwin.

Well despite all that at least he took his opportunities and did it all in one half of footy. Being a forward in the AFL is a hard gig as it is. As far as I’m concerned even if he doesn’t play a whole lot of afl games for us, he’ll be good forward depth which we don’t really have.

You also missed the fact that in the last quarter he smothered a dogs player’s kick, so edwards is capable of providing that forward pressure.

We just got rid of guys like Heppell and Kelly out of the side (hallelujah) I’m not sure why you’d want to add Baldwin into the mix whose just the same type of boring

Anyone who helps lead us towards a better balanced forwardline and move beyond Dodo’s serial underachievers like Jones is ok with me.

No rights, but we are the one that gave him the chance so he would be doing a dirty if he went to another club if we offered him a contract

Fair enough. That seems to be the consensus opinion.

To some extent, but if a WA club got on the phone, I could completely understand why he’d want to stay in his home state.

What else do you want from him, the kids fighting for an AFL career, he’s travelled across the country for this opportunity and your worried that his 4 goals on restricted minutes doesn’t have enough credibility.

Our biggest problem in recent years is inability to convert when the ball goes forward, players that can find the sticks are worth their weight in Gold.
I’m a Baldwin fan but sign this kid up first thing Monday.

Exactly. He’s been given a very short time to prove himself and clearly has made the most of his opportunities. It’s a no brainer.

The excuses I’ve seen of ‘we have enough forwards’ and his ‘slight build for a 25 year old’ as reasons not to pick him up both are also not valid. The recruitment team have already shown they are comfortable with that which is why he’s got an invite to training in the first place. It’s all about has he taken the opportunity and shown the traits they’ve seen at WAFL level and surely the answer is yes.

This business of him being too skinny so he might not get selected is dumb. Clearly we knew what he looked like before we asked him to train with us.

I agree your sentiments. I want to see him more to be comfortable he isn’t a one half wonder. Not saying he isn’t the genuine article, just need to see more to be more confident what we have.

He makes good positions there’s a strength, and has good hands. That’s a good start.

Given timeline, I think if they’ve seen his strong hands, good positioning and IQ enough at training you’d have to sign him up….

Baldwin, unfortunately it wasn’t to be which is a pity as he has attributes and great character / attitude. He’s dedicated, determined and he persevered. That’s unfortunate for him.

Really happy for him that he was able to take his opportunity.

However, let’s not forget Alec Waterman kicking four against Carlton in a pre season match. Would have been great to see him again against the cats

Edwards reminds me of John Northey. All 69kg of him but knew where the goals were.

Interesting poll and bit of banter between Rick Edwards and the lads at Absolutely Ess
