The Reigning Dj King (Mk XIII) is @nobody...it's Blonde DJ Time again with @mrjez being at his divisive best (Part 1)

What @frosty said…when I was looking around the other day, I found a youtube clip of Stevie Ray Vaughan performing Little Wing in 1983…but it was on the album Couldn’t Stand The Weather from 1984.

That was the best track (imo) in the final so I was content to judge it on the album release

For sure, any solid band in a comfortable setting works.
I was Northern Suburbs based so Bombay Rock was home for a while.
Got to see everything from the Romantics thru to early Psychedelic Furs.
And all the great homegrown acts.

I saw Men at Work at the Merimbula RSL and that was good

Agreed. What a rendition that was.

I like that the rules have a bit of Wild West about them hahaha.

I saw Men At Work at Selina’s in Sydney and they were supported by Moving Pictures before they broke out.

I’d never heard of Moving Pictures at that stage (being from Melbourne) but all the Sydney punters were singing their hearts out.

That’s why I deliberately asked the question during the comp whether Peos was vetting the songs against their release date.

I knew full well he wouldn’t have done, but figured the reaction to the question would be fun (“fark no” or words to that effect)…

So I knew Bombay Rock had been a thing, didn’t realise it had run as long as it had (77-91), or that earlier it has been in Burke St as “Bombay Bicycle Club”.

It reopened just prior to Covid as a rock venue, which I was aware of (and I never knew a single band on the bill any day that I walked past!) but doesn’t seem to have survived.

Anyway, it just preceded my band going time. I reckon I went to the Sarah Sands once in 1991 as the first time I went to a gig that far north

Now listening to Dragon’s debut album “Universal Radio”

I’d never even heard of it before and it came up on Youtube when I was listening to “Body and the Beat”

It is nothing like their well known albums…it’s pure prog rock

Checking it out now. Nice opening on the keys.

And from that, I’ve found “Fool’s Gold” by Axiom from 1970…the Youtube channel they’re both on seems to have a lot of lesser known and downright obscure stuff…might be an interesting next few days

I’m big into prog, particularly modern prog metal (hence my Contortionist selection in the Wildcard round which admittedly flopped and wasn’t metal enough I suppose). So far this album is great, very Pink Floyd.

Got into Dragon going through Dads record collection which he passed down to me. He’s a digital man, funnily enough I’m into the vinyls nowadays.

I’ve found a number of new (to me) prog rock bands in the last twelve months.

@BAAKKEERRRR recommended Porcupine Tree and I’ve really gotten into them…then I found Arena (album - Contagion), IQ (The Road of Bones), Snake Mountain Revival (Everything In Sight), Slift (Ummon) found out about them on here via PP2 and Thee Oh Sees (a number of albums)

I think that’s a generational thing…I’m like your dad…prefer my music in digital form as I never have to get up to change the record :joy:

I’ve always found the Dragon connection to Mr Asia syndicate intriguing. No matter how tenuous it may have been, just Kiwis magnetised while abroad. Lengthy read, had to cross check who was who. Wouldn’t call myself a fan really but I appreciate Dragon, they had one of the more colourful stories.

For both yours & @swoodley 's benefit, there’s a comprehensive history of early-mid Dragon to be found here:

Quite sad in parts… they were pretty wild and loose boys! Read the article about Body & The Beat. The band had broken up beforehand and only regrouped to do a tour and pay off debts (initially there were no plans for recording). Sad how Paul Hewson’s issues had taken over and his role in the band was being diminished…

(Edit: oh snap, @Socks_and_Sandals has just posted the same thing above…)

They have a new album out shortly too Swoods (first for quite some time). Not sure if that’ll be a good thing… guess we’ll find out…

Thanks to you guys for the great trip down memory lane, especially the lining up at ■■■■ o’clock outside Myer (Knox for me) for tickets.

I’d still take a peak INXS live over Chisels, Oils and ACDC any day, but that probably talks to my tastes. Noting I was more into Boom Crash Opera and Aussie Crawl than others mentioned.

Going overseas acts, was listening to Smartless podcast recently where they has Eddie Vedder on.
Sean Hayes, one of the hosts talked about organising a Uni entertainment night I assume it was early 90’s.

On the bill -
Pearl Jam
Smashing Pumpkins
Red Hot Chili Peppers

Free yes for the song if votes are still happening

Mrjez has won the coveted BDJ crown in controversial circumstances. After being gifted a spot in the final when looking destined for the wildcard round, he stormed home to claim victory in what many are calling the lowest standard BDJ final…EVER. BDJ commissioner Gillon_Peos has denied there being an asterisk beside Mrjez’s name as the decision was correct due to the mood of the game. “No doubt, to everyone who follows the game it could look that way, but we have the power to make the rules up as we go. So in the end we got the result that we wanted and what we thought was the mood of the game” said Gillon_Peos when asked if there was an asterisk beside Mrjez’s name.

Interestingly, long time anti-commission campaigner Klawdy_Francis has submitted a FOI request to the BDJ commision to see the timings of the song submission as he thinks the result is “farken bullsh1t”. The request itself will be watched closely as the commission is a private company and in no way has to release that information. But we feel if it was successful, there would be more redaction than visible paper, due to the shiftiness of the result. More to come…

Congrats Jez! Great win legend. And thanks Peos for running the comp. It’s a time consuming beast. Especially when you’re trying to negotiate life and the flu as well.

Can’t wait for the next one.

Porcupine Tree albums I dug the most were Deadwing and Nil Recurring EP. The EP is an alternative version of tracks from Fear of A Blank Planet and I reckon it cuts out all the filler. Steven Wilson also has some pretty out there solo stuff, particularly his first one.

Maybe if you run it again you can rig it in your favour…again
