The second school l taught at, Keysborough Tech, had a known pedo on staff, as it turns out in the same dept. l taught in. He was also an alcoholic who joked about having a liquid lunch. One story that went around at the time was that he paid a parent to baby sit some kids, and that they knew of his activities. The school admin did nothing much to stop him, apart from schedule him for the roughest and toughest classes, at the time it was an all boys school at that stage. He lasted one more year, 1985, before he was locked up. I think there was a write up of his trial in The Truth. He died not long after, due to his alcoholism.
We had one at my high school too. He was a fan of pairing off students, providing booze or drugs and filming the ensuing results.
Was the most popular teacher on campus, many were devastated when he was sprung. A few even bullied the kid who reported him. Sad situation.
This seems incomprehensible now but a teacher at Perth Modern School had an open relationship with a student between 1983-85. They would both come to school in his car, park in the teachers car park, kiss, then he would go to the teachers prep area and she would go off to class. After school, they would leave together. No one batted an eye lid.
because they give them what most kids, hell most people want, attention and caring nature … sadly they are doing it for nefarious reasons, but sadly most kids don’t see/know that at that age.
“We are getting our integrity department to find the carpet sweeper again but we are gunna need a bigger rug”
I hate reading about these sorts of things because I often see what becomes of these people. For many, their life actually “ends” right then and there. Anyone who can survive and rise above it to live a decent life is an amazing person.
He’s also a St Kilda fan, which makes the articles even more impressive.

That was a tough, tough read.
Using a coveted St Kilda jumper as bait, a 1970s paedophile ring turned the Saints Little League dreams of many boys into a nightmare. Russell Jackson reports on the trail of chaos and misery.
Somehow even harder to read than the first story, ■■■■. Infuriating and heartbreaking on an industrial scale.
based on history, i wonder how many other clubs had rock spiders in their midsts. surely its not isolated to this extent to st kilda.
Probably why the AFL will stay silent. Don’t want to dig up too many bones
I’d be more concerned if the AFL did have anything to do with an “investigation”.
Send it all to VicPol.
I’ve never understood why there is a statute of limitations for sexual assault.

That is a harrowing read.
Awful story. He was a talent. The 70s and 80s were a minefield for young kids and teenagers playing Aussie Rules. Great parties and looking back what a time to play football and grow up in. But there were many dangers. I went to the secondary school a bus stop away from Rod’s in Mentone. And let me tell you abuse of young people and footballers wasn’t limited to Beauy High nor Moorabbin.
The game was vs St.Bernards, Essendon (ironic or what) at theirs. We had a v good team with several who went onto success in VFL/AFL. It was a big game we needed to win in order to win the league. I was told I was ruck as all our normal ruckmen were injured. I was a forward … never a ruckman, so deep joy. But there I suddenly was standing opposite none other than Justin Madden as the ball was bounced. Late in Q1 we went up but tangled and I fell… problem was he fell on top of me badly twisting my ankle. I was helped off and shortly after found myself alone back in the rooms with a paedophile teacher (of the cloth mind you) who insisted he “help”. I fought him off somehow. I really had to fight. Traumatic to say the least … yet could I have mentioned or reported it to anyone back then? Of course we couldn’t. It was rife. You just had to get on with it …
These days parents are so more aware of the need to protect their children from those types. The training which coaches must undergo is very good. Mandatory … and so it should be. To allow young innocent lives to be ruined by ruthless, cunning and frankly ill paedophiles as these articles highlight is a crime that cripples their victims and the many people around them.
Reading these things Rod Owen and Trevor Foster endured is hard. I escaped… many like them didn’t.
Just read the ABC write up and about to read the Rod Owen story. Extraordinary. I can’t believe this ■■■■ went on for so long without anyone noticing. The Mrs was watching a doco on Netflix (I think) about the US olympics team. A bunch of young female gymnasts were abused for years. It’s insane.
