so is drinking alcohol. should we stop selling that at the footy ? i mean, the AFL are supporting a real society issue aren’t they?
Can we get rid of all those ads on TV run with sporting events, promoting them as sport?
Yeah, and everyone knows it.
Are you suggesting that we ban all forms of gambling because 1% of the population can’t control themselves?
Let’s ban alcohol, cigarettes and cocaine too whilst we’re at it!
lol cmon
When it comes to whether a sporting organisation should derive a large chunk of its revenue off these sorts of industries, my stance is the same. Even the EFC wine really rubbed me the wrong way.
Organisations who primarily produce these sorts of products, well it is what it is. They are engaged in the industry of producing harmful and addictive products but people have individual agency to choose whether they want to consume them.
I think it’s a different equation, at least it is for me, when a sporting organisation which champions and positions itself as a family friendly and socially in touch organisation derives a large chunk of revenue off something which is known to cause significant harm to Australians.
I also don’t cop that only 1% of those who go to pokies are addicted. I think it’s much more likely that the statistic is reversed, that only a small amount aren’t.
Yes you can. Like in a bar where they stop serving you drinks when you’ve had too much, they could put limits on pokies. Government would need to legislate it, which they won’t because they make too much money out of it.
So it’s the association with the venue that’s the problem? The venue that has pokies and serves alcohol?
I say we ban under garments as well.
Hey, hey, let’s not go too far.
Morally I take a very dim view of the AFLs stance on alcohol and gambling. Personally I loathe the Australian culture of drinking.
My primary concern with drinking at the footy is not only the anti social behaviour it encourages but also the impact on shaping children’s view of alcohol.
If I had it my way I’d ban it. But financially and realistically from a cultural perspective I recognise that can never happen.
Some people are genetically predisposed to addictive behaviours through no fault of their own, so blaming them for engaging in a behaviour undertaken by many others who don’t become addicted, is pretty callous.
Pokies are deliberately designed to psychologically entrap these people, and have a larger footprint in poorer socio economic areas for a good reason - they make more money. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for people to dislike them as a result of how they are designed and implemented.
It’s the association with an organisation that doesn’t primarily engage in the provision of gaming services.
Ownership of pokie machines by the EFC regardless of the venue they are located at is hypocritical.
That’s a really good point. Alcohol causes far more damage to society than poker machines, yet no one wants to ban grog at the footy. You get the odd moron who can’t, but most people can handle it responsibly. Is that not a double standard.
Pokies are slightly different, in that a greater portion of those who use them have an addiction than those who drink alcohol.
That Essendon selling pokies will not make people less addicted to pokies. It shifts the problem, it doesn’t solve it.
Of course the EFC can’t solve the problem, but they don’t have to be a part of it.
I’m not saying they do, which is why I said that I don’t mind if they do sell their pokies.
I say get rid of as soon as possible, but more importantly can some of the Blitzers, that were at the ground, write a report so the rest of us know what happened.
I heard that the ex captain injured his leg, what else happened. As an interstate member it is the only way i have to keep in touch with team.
essendon should move its pokies to kew, for mine
yeah bro just push this button and maybe it will come out
I say get rid of as soon as possible, The A.C.T. have none anywhere in the territory.
But more importantly can some of the Blitzers, that were at the ground, write a report so the rest of us know what happened.
