I suspect that GWS probably wouldn’t mind offloading 2 players to us, but that if they do, it’ll be an Aylett type ‘steak knives’ arrangement. Player A, who is the one that we actually want, plus player B, who is the one that we don’t particularly want but who they need out of their salary cap so they’re insisting we take as a condition of trading player A to us.

So in that case, IF player A is a Shiel-calibre player, I’d suspect player B is a bloke who’s contracted and been around a few years so is on decent coin, but who probably isn’t one of their top-liners. Not someone like Setterfield who would still only be on relatively moderate $ cos of his age.

Dawson Simpson is the only one that fits those criteria and would be somewhat useful for us as a stopgap option.

Shiel is a handy player but he’s not going make that big a difference to the team. I’d rather Gaff, who we can get probably for free, and has the silk Shiel hasn’t. And I reckon in a bumper draft like this year we can pick up a quality player early who can make an impact and have a full career in the red and black ahead of him.

I’m tending to agree. Who’s in Darcy Parish’s ear telling him that we are backing him in over Shiel? In saying that, Id be prepared to roll the dice and work on a deal for Setterfield which involves next years first or preferably a player and a second.
This year bring in Gaff, and in the draft Rozee, or King… Next year pick up Coniglio as a restricted free agent.

It is very unlikely that Rozee or one of the King boys get to our pick 10. We have to be realistic about this.

Pick 8 goes to 9 for the Lynch compensation (at 3) and 9 becomes 10 when Sydney match an early bid for Blakey.

I agree wit the rationale of keeping our early pick but let’s be realistic and call it pick 10.

He was was probably one of our best when smack went down, he ran and presented all day and then some?
He played Stewart’s role far better than Stewart

Perhaps, but the fact is that we have signed Stewart already (which should say something about how the club is thinking) and Brown is 28 next year so he’s getting on a bit. I don’t think he’ll be delisted by any means, but they might feel he has some trade currency and that with the likes of Smack and Stewart, his position is already pretty well covered.

If trading brown nets us Sheil, plus one more then I’m all for it. If not we should keep him

Wouldn’t you think if the King brothers like playing footy together the Suns will take them with 2 and 3.

Very hard for one club to pry them out if they turn out any good, one plays as a key fwd and I believe from memory one can play back. Hopefully they get along with Stocker who should be avaliable with around their 3rd first rounder.

This opinion was more controversial 2-3 weeks ago.

Blitz has been paying more attention to what Shiel actually delivers and is starting to come around to a sensible conclusion that the sum of his parts is not as good as one might assume.

Yep, I’m perhaps being a little optimistic! I think if the order plays out the way I think it might then our first comes from one of; Hately or Hill as most likely, with Collier Dawkins or Caldwell the smoky…

If nobody bids on him, the swans would keep their top picks and get to use them to pick from the open pool. If somebody does bid on him, that removes a swans pick from the draft, so where he goes in the draft isn’t entirely irrelevant.

Even if we say that he definitely goes prior to the swans’ first round pick, if a bid comes in at pick 5 or higher, then the points to match will eat into their 2nd round pick and push it back behind ours (previous the giants’).

If the Giants reported salary cap pressure is accurate, and they are keen to retain Shiel, we may be able to help.

Setterfield is the player we are keen on.
We rate him, they rate him, but he is coming off a knee and some injuries as a junior.
Unfortunately for us, he doesn’t provide GWS with any meaningful salary cap relief.
The steak knives player should be Deledio.
He has 1 year to run at 500k.
Add in Setterfield on 200k-ish, and the now retired Griffen, and they’ve likely freed up 1.1-1.2mil.

We need to raise our standards and more importantly win the ‘easy’ games and get the Essington out of our club.

As a comparison to the top 8 teams…
Geelong was the only team in the 8 to lose to the Bulldogs, Cats or Dockers. We lost to all 3.

We’ve lost games like this in the past and still think we’ve ‘learned’ enough from the situation to make it to finals the following season.
We’re not far behind the top 8 teams, but mentally, we are further behind the top 4 teams.
Eradicate the bullshit losses and we put ourselves in with a chance of a prelim. And players like Shiel will raise the standards within the club. Until then, we’ll be tumbled out of the finals early or stay around middle table.

Something like this could work…

If we are adding the Lid to our injury list @ 500k I would expect our second for their third to do the job. Setterfield might be worth a late first rounder alone, but taking 500k off someones salary cap when they are in trouble has significant value in the trade.
