Trade Talk 2019: who should we beat our chest like an ape about now?

According to Nixon, Trade Whisperer was Sam McClure who was forced to delete his tweets when he was “uncovered” last week. Sounds like BS

Hearing Patton may be involved in Scully deal. Surely not just a nominal pick for two former no.1 picks, even if they have a chequered injury history.

Who is Scully managed by?

Ffs.

Just throw in more players for Hawthorn.

Agreed.

Scully and Patton for peanuts.

If that’s the case, could we get away with using just pick 9 for Shiel?

GWS salary cap and list concession were phased out after the first 5 years. The timetable for this was known ever since the expansion concessions were first announced. I don’t know if they have a COLA.

Hard to argue that GWS has ballsed up though. They’ve made prelims in the last two years despite heavy injury tolls, and if their current membership trajectory continues, they’re likely to start overtaking some of the victorian clubs in the next 5 years or so.

I think they current deck-clearing is at least partially because they want to be sure they have the $ available to compete with go-home bids for Coniglio, Kelly etc over the next. They’ll still have a very strong midfield unit for years to come with those two, Ward, Greene, Hopper, etc.

I’m not going to defend GC, but if anything GWS were screwed over by the effects free agency had in making contracts basically optional on the players’ side.

I thought there was rules about draftees being on fixed contracts for the 1st 2 years to avoid compromising the draft.

The Shiel “curveball” sounds like rubbish given the reports that we were deep into, and confident of landing, Shiel the whole time.

However, there seems to be enough smoke that we were into Scully that it would be surprising if we let him walk to Hawthorn for peanuts. Either (a) he was a back-up if Shiel didn’t eventuate (b) the reports of Scully to Hawthorn are premature and we are still trying to get something done, © Scully only wants to go to Hawthorn or (d) the Scully and Ess links were off the mark. My guess is (a) but who knows. Would be frustrating to see the comp gift Hawthorn another star for chicken feed.

I’ll be furious if they get Patton and Scully for nothing. Fair dinkum spew up!

There is, but there’s no rule against you extending a player for more than the default fixed contract before their rookie contract is up. That’s what GWS did with Setterfield.

(And what we did for McGrath too)

My gut feeling was that we were probably concentrating on getting Scully and Martin, convinced that Shiel wouldn’t pick us.
However now we’re in a pickle as acquiring Shiel may have unsettled the others managers and we don’t have enough picks to get all 3.
Would we have preferred Shiel on his own or a Scully/Martin combo?

Jordan Roughead likely going to Pies.

Pies also trying to get Jake Neade. Fire sale at Alberton?

Gosh.
No May, then.

His ankle is pretty fked. Wont be running till january

Because nixon called him out. Its mclure that ran the trade whisperer page. Sounds about right too for his ego.

NM enquired but are of the belief Haw in the box seat.

So Hawks may get Scully and Patton for very little and Wingard this trade period?

I guess there are a few options

1 is that we think he is cooked and were never interested
2 is that the Hawks were not interested until they lost Shiel, and are willing to take the risk with a front ended contract using the money they were going to pay Shiel this year. (4 x 500 becomes 1 x 900 3 x 365) if they only have to drop a third rounder on him.
3. We were going to take the risk on him in much the same manner as the Hawks above, but got across the line with Shiel.
4. We think Gold Coast will cave on Martin and are keeping the space incase they do. If they don’t we will lob an offer in much the same manner as above using the cap space we set aside.
5. We want him and are trying to make some space with a trade out, and can’t enter the fray until this is done
