Trade Talk 2019: who should we beat our chest like an ape about now?

I guess it depends if Martin becomes avaliable this year, or are we prepared to wait until next season and deal with GCS?

Martin in a heartbeat if available, good age plays in a position we need, Less $$$$

Agreed, the only sticking point is GC and their demanding nature

IF Martin has requested a trade and May appears increasingly more likely to stay
Are gc more likely to trade with us? And do we actually have enough currency?

Most people dont realise the extent of AFL interference over the gws list management. In the early days especially, the afl wanted pretty much instant success, and the afl made gws recruit some experienced players and pay them well over what they were worth. The young draftees were all paid normal amounts, but now they are all due pay rises.

This salary cap pressure is the fault of the afl, not gws so much. A friend’s contact at the giants told him (and texts which Ive seen for myself) they were ā€œforcedā€ to recruit some players who brought some recent success but now the chickens have come home to roost.

So this mess isnt all a result of gws mismanagement, but by direct afl meddling.

Martin would be on less $, but we’d have to give up double (or more) to acquire him. If the rumours are true that GWS are offloading Scully for peanuts then I think that’s the way to go

The afl cannot punish gws for a problem they themselves have created. GWS arent over the cap, but they afl have created this mess.

Short answer is ā€œnoā€. He got out while he could.

I don’t understand how you can sign players to cause a cap issue in future years.

Does the AFL only assess this years cap?

You would think if you submit a whole heap of back ended contracts the AFL should knock them back. I know, I know the AFL does what it wants. But seems irresponsible to let a club do it.

With nothing but the clothes on his back and 13 players.

I’d be really shocked if the AFL was trying to cover something up.

GWS is suffering because they have talent that demanded high salaries. Irrespective of AFL control. If you have so many high draft picks who show potential then you need to pay them. With Coniglio, Cameron, Kelly, Ward, Greene, Williams in the same team… is it really surprising that they’re having to prioritise signings. And let’s be honest if we had a choice of Kelly, Coniglio or Shiel we wouldn’t pick Shiel out of that three. Its just come at once due to structuring of contracts. But I think the talk of ā€˜implosion’ is a bit much. GWS are going to be a good side for a while yet, with stacks of talent on that list

Thats only half the story.

Its not just the mids either.

Cameron, Lobb, Himmelberg, Patton is an embarrassment of riches for key forwards.

They can trade Lobb and Patton out and still be left with two good key forwards.

Yep. Just like Fark Carlton had Shiel signed and delivered.

Because Essendon… drug den…difficult to deal with…

Well I’d be confident the AFL suggested signings would have been heavily front loaded and are now on manageable coin. Some are on record as taking cuts to help the salary cap.
We can chastise them all we like, but most are envious of the talent they still have. And of we thought we had a legitimate shot at a flag (and they did in 2016/17) would we really be that critical of management going hard to win it. Its shades of 2002 for us, big difference is we got a flag in 2000 to show for it

If we traded out Heppel, Zaka and Begley what do you think we would want for picks in return for each? Sheil is definitely worth a whole lot more, just like Heppel would be for us.
