Trade Talk 2019: who should we beat our chest like an ape about now?

Wake up, log in, see 150 unread posts, scroll a bit, see new names appear as someone we could be chasing, plus still chatter about previous ones, Nixon still called a clown.

Realise it’s all too much to decipher what exactly is going on. Will wait for end of trade week to know all.

Plus brekky beckons.

Trade time is full on and “fun”, but impossible to follow it “sensibly” ad hoc.

Most likely Scully is going to Hawthorn although it’s interesting he hasn’t nominated the club yet considering the deal is meant to be straight forward, which suggests maybe it isn’t? Maybe he hasn’t made up his mind (unlikely).

Let’s not forget, during the week the press have been saying a first and next years second is fair value for Shiel yet nothing’s been finalised. Maybe GWS want more than a second or third rounder for Scully? If the rumour is true about Paton maybe the Hawks are balking at that?

Are there really 2 clubs in play for Scully’s signature? The press are super confident it’s Hawthorn only.

So, with no announcement from the Scully camp about his choice/intention it’s fair to assume both parties haven’t come to an agreement (likely) or there are 2 clubs involved (unlikely) and the Scully camp are weighing up the better offer/fit, i.e. pay/term/list (unlikely)?

Personally, I’d like Scully. He’s got at least another 4-5 good years (which coincides with Essendon’s “window”) and his gut running / transitioning from defence to attack is just what Essendon need + he loves kicking goals (he is the package!).

You see “Leggo’s” building bricks and “Brabie” dolls at the same shops.

I suspect some think we are playing fantasy footy. Doubt very much that EFC have cap space to fit in Scully.

The most likely scenario is that a number of GWS players contracts are actually backloaded. As each year goes by, the salary of players brought in under that arrangement goes up. At first, they are able to tolerate it, because there is capacity to go over the cap because TPP can be rolling averaged over 2 years. But then it hits the fan. Either those players have to retire, or be moved on. GWS must be in that territory. If they are, their position is weakened at the trade table, hence bargain basement price for Scully, especially with doubts over his fitness.

Syndesmosis injury at its worse can be career ending. Scully might be cooked. Hawthorn took the risk with JOM and at least partly succeeded. Maybe that has increased their risk appetite, based on over confidence?
Martin has much lower risk, and has more X factor than Scully we maybe more risk averse?

you probably could do it with a back ended deal. but it would be really tricky, especially when our young guns are at their contracts end and ask for more money.

would think it would be worth Jackets having a try. hes an unbelievably good player when hes fit.

Why go to Germany? Oktoberfest is on in StKilda, lots of babes in dirndls and guys looking gawky in lederhosen ready to grasp their steins. Ubers already queueing up for later tonight.

Octoberfest (proper) finished about a week ago

Are we getting Libba?

Free agency closed yesterday and unless Essendon are super interested and make the Dogs sign him and then trade for him, I highly doubt it.

If we haven’t got cap space for Scully this year, is it more or less likely we will have cap space for Martin next year?

Mitch Brown says hi, and has Stewart covered for running power. In one round towards the end of the season he covered more kms than anyone else on the ground. Big bodied midfielder? Not a bit of it, he is just prepared to lead and work hard, to provide the defence with a link man.

Goddard OUT & Shiel IN will effectively cancel each other out or near enough anyway.

Then we have OOC at present - Leuey (will be on decent $$), Hartley, Bags, Dea, McNeice & Long

Of the potential contracted players who might be shifted… Colyer also will be on reasonable $ and LAV recently re-signed after a lot of haggling (Jay Clark has said twice now it’s a possibility with Lav, perhaps GC keen)

If we need to free up $$ it will no doubt be able to be done.

***. We’ve also cut Green & Jerrett already who’d have been on minimum chips only though.

Goddard was on 900k a year? I don’t think they were close whatsoever.

And we may get rid of all those blokes but we still have to replace them with other players which will cost money.

Been mentioned by those who apparently in the know on here that Goddard was on much more than people would expect.

He’d won a B&F, captained the club in 2016 through a ■■■■ storm, we lost various players on big $$ contracts all through his time here, he was continually in our top performed players along the way & key leaders.

I’m not saying it’s $900k but we also don’t know Shiel getting that either.

And yes that’s the point, if required - getting rid of blokes frees up $$ to spend on incoming players. And the draftees will not be on much for remaining list spots.

By mistake I searched for “hot gravies I’d like to f***” and now I have third-degree burns and a saucepan I’ll never be able to use again. Thanks Doe.

More likely you would think.

Myers - possibly retire

Colyer - traded or delisted

Brown - traded or delisted

Laverde - though contracted, could perhaps seek more opportunities elsewhere if he doesn’t establish himself in the Senior side.

Hartley, Baguley, Leuey ???..not big earners, but unlikely to be on list post 2019.

Brown re-signed for 2? already IIRC
