Trade talk - from August 2024

I very much doubt we’d look back in time and think ‘damn we should have given Lav 2 years, he would have really been the difference to get us a flag that year’. Its a win for us to maintain and hold our stance for standards.

Lav is not going anywhere, his manager would have told him already “mate, no ones interested” and no ones gonna give you two years, so just stick around.

Stringer is a 50/50

If Lav goes to Geelong, he plays for another 3-4 years.
and likely gets to see some finals success.
Better than going to saints or Fark Carlton

Sorry I hadn’t read up ik the thread

If he is bid earlier on though that extra pick will be cooked some degree.

I don’t see many teams needing small forwards ahead of us that would bid that early.

Tigers maybe?

He’s not going to get a whole lot. Obviously Lav wants security, I’d doubt we would get more than a 3rd rounder, a pick in the 40-55 region likely.

That’s laughable. We can’t get him out quicken enough. He’s more likely pick 40-50 ish.

got to remember this is a strong draft.
a pick in 40-50s more than fair.

we could do 28 + LAV into 24 but need to think that we get ahead of Kako bid…which is doubtful.

This this this.

There always seems to be a collective amnesia in the offseason. We can’t bear to part with the players who have taken us nowhere. We need to keep them as “insurance” as if playing some kids and losing some games is the worst thing in the world.

Fark it. If the winds of change involve moving on from Hepps and Kelly and Lav and Stringer (and better include Goldy and Weid) then I’m all for it.

Let’s see a different backline next year. One that can move the ball quicker than the sideways panic merchants.

Let’s see a different forwardline next year. One that can keep the ball in there and actually pressure the ball carrier on exit.

If any of the above players are on the list next year Brad will play them. He is completely dogmatic about his “play the best team” mentality (even though I think he gets that wrong). The temptation needs to be taken away.

If Lav, Stringer, Goldy or Weid is lining up at round 1, 2025 then we’ve missed a massive opportunity.

We could get repeat entries, just even then we struggled to score and then opposition had pagans paddock to run into and score at will.

Also not to forget but if our interest in Rosas is real than you could get him for that pick.
Could turn Laverde into Rosas or just take it to the draft

Keeping the ball in is different to repeat entries. We need opposition defenders to actually fear that they might be chased down which will lead to more mistakes and more opportunities for goals (you know, like the mistakes we give up countless times in a game). Having the ball come out easily and then rebounded at the halfway line only for the same thing to happen again and again and again is not a recipe for success.

If we can get a pick in the 20s as well as other picks for Stringer and a fringe player or two, than that pick can cover the Kako bid and we will still have picks in the late 20s or 30s etc.

Just because a pick gets wiped out bidding doesn’t make it redundant. I think we should be maximising the amount of points we have across this draft anyway. We can always trade picks on draft night as well and maximise picks next year with anything we don’t need.

We were shipping players for less than a top 30 pick when Adrian was running list management as well.

Lav for 40-60, not fussed
Shiel for 40-60, not fussed
Jake for 30-50, not fussed
Parish for two picks inside 30, don’t care where
Draper for two picks inside 30, 1 inside 20

Goldy gets 1 year as pure back up
Weideman into cannon

Rosas, Dante Visentini and Perryman as trades/FA

Hit draft and SSP hard.

Not fussed if we draft 6 blokes with picks after 50, just start turning bodies over!

Happy with most of this…but I think Parish is worth 1 inside 20 pick at least.

not getting a inside 20 oick for a slow short and can’t kick midfielder

What is being shown by this trade period, although it is still early, is how other clubs view our players. There is very litttle interest in them. The value blitzers put on them is way over what the rest of the football world thinks they are worth. I think Essendon supporters should think about thi when assessing the state of our list.

Maybe, but I’m not worried as the main benefit is he’s no longer here and we can work on a new dynamic around the ball. If he’s here in 2025, he’s going to play the most minutes in our midfield.

I don’t think Blitz values any of our players outside of Merrett, Durham and Caddy.

I don’t reckon Lav’s year was all that bad, all told.

He is what he is.
