Didn’t our clearance numbers improve when Shiel came in?
Statistics wise, Shiel is the best centre clearance player in the comp
- Stringer
- Shiel
- Laverde
- Hobbs
- Parish
- Draper
- McGrath
- Cox
- Jones
I don’t know why, but it seems that every time Shiel returns, we play ■■■■. It’s not like he plays poorly, but our team dynamic changes because we end up with Hobbs in a pocket, Durham at HF etc.
We need to make some tough calls on some good players to fix the team dynamic.
Cox and Jones need to be played forward or trade them this year. This 200cm wing experiment must end. Perkins is a HF, just play him there. Durham and Caldwell should be part of the starting midfield every week. Parish should have been traded last year before he signed, but now he starts on the bench. Setterfield in the middle with Durham and Caldwell is my choice, because he is a defensive mid. Put Merrett and Roberts at HB, Martin and Duursma on each wing. Trade Tsatas and Hobbs.
We need to turn over underperforming top picks quicker. Especially if their disposal is questionable. Use the picks we get from them to draft in quality ball users in any position.
It goes beyond just those 3 players.
Yep, the problem is that he throws out the team cohesion when he plays. Same with Parish.
Fark… I thought I was being ruthless, but C_H has me beat
Number 10 will be available soon.
Agree with everything CH said.
28 is already ours though. Pies picks are 33, 40 and 43.
If the deal was 33 and 40 for Hobbs + Rd 5 pick or some such it starts to make for sense.
Agree with everything you said above this. Tsatas though is a must keep, he will be a jet.
Hobbs I like but I feel the coaching staff don’t rate him more than a midfield back up. He’s at a stage where his value is still high enough to warrant an acceptable trade. If he is to languish in the 2nds and on the bench another season, we’ll ruin his value and him as a footballer.
I’d look at packaging him up with Lav and shop him to the tigs or stkilda. With the pick/s, send them on elsewhere for another player as they’ll be eaten up with the kako bid.
Needs an ‘other’ option
We aren’t going to trade that many players out.
I reckon Laverde and Stringer will get other deals. Shiel probably has a foot out the door already. Hobbs may be tempted by a club offering more clear senior opportunities. That’ll probably be it.
Actually, trading four players out is a pretty busy trade period to be fair.
Trading out guys tied to high value long term deals is not as simple as going “nahh, we changed our mind”. It doesn’t happen that often. We’d be doing well to broker one trade of those players, let alone multiple, let alone in a single offseason.
I suspect we’ll keep Wright despite all the noise.
He is conservative but also, we have a team stacked with butchers and players who aren’t great at running both ways.
It’s a nightmare but Scott’s failing is not analysing the list quickly enough and making sound forward planning decisions early on based on pretty evident self strengths/weaknesses.
To be fair I think his focus has been largely off field because it’s absolute bin fire there too. He’s clearly prioritised trying to raise general levels of professionalism before anything else and prioritised those players that meet those standards in an attempt to embed them with the opposing group more broadly.
That approach may well pay dividends in the long run but the fact remains that he has a very poor average skill level on the list and not a lot of pieces he can move to try and change that quickly.
Clearance differential paints a better picture:
Our game style might lend itself to less clearances overall?
So still in the bottom half of the league. Wouldn’t exactly say that’s humming
Top half actually but we’re splitting hairs
Wrong. Massimo has major defensive deficiencies hence why he plays on the wing at Whorethorn.
Well tied 9th/10th on total. I’d class that as a fail and that we’re as bad as 10th.
Can never figure out how we can be a decent centre clearance team, but consistently bad at stoppage.
I wouldn’t be surprised if our numbers were better before he returned, he is a good selfish player but hurts the team balance. We went downhill after he returned, coincidentally or not. And the same goes for Parish.
Parish is good at coming in and getting all the stats, but we go nowhere with him in there.
Duz and Caldwell in Parish and Shiel out (for picks) would be my call on the list.
