Trade talk - from October 2024 (Part 7)

Time for other clubs to stop playing nice with Hawthorn. Offer their players a fortune to leave and start demanding top dollar for any contracted players.

You if you think the dogs will let Bontempelli walk as a free agent, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

I thought they paid overs for Barrass at the time

I think one of Ed Allan or Ned Long would be gettable as a 194cm big-bodied-mid. I think we still lack that CBA size. Could kind of replace Setterfield on the list.

Collingwood can’t seem to play them both in the same team. Surprisingly to me, they’re preferring Long right now.

Long is a young DFA. So no picks required.

Allan is contracted until end 2026, but I was just reading about how Collingwood lack points for academy/father sons this year…maybe they’d let Allan go, for something involving a second rounder, knowing that they have Ned Long for the same role.

My preferred strategy this year = Try to get LDU or other free agent…trade a 2nd rounder for a solid player…keep a 2nd for our academy boys…and use our 1sts on draft day.

If WC had chosen Carlton’s future first they would have got a good return but it’s not looking such a good trade in hindsight.

Bont could be backup if we miss Reid.

Bontempelli isn’t restricted. You would imagine dogs want him to stay. It like from his perspective he’s achieved everything he can at the dogs. Already has a premiership and is an all time great.

Could get efc connections and opportunities post career.

Him going would be similar to Goddard leaving saints. Helps them with rebuild based around next generation with Darcy.

Lewis, Hodge and Mitchell have paved the way for club greats leaving the club and not tarnishing career and original club links.

This just shows how people overrated draft picks, you could do a similar graphic for other successful clubs. Not that Hawthorn have been successful yet.

Wouldn’t be interested in too many of them if they were available

Why do westcoast have a 26 year old as captain?.

At their stage they would be better off with a veteran whilst they stack their list with quality under 22 talent.

It’s not as if they are short any golden oldies.

I’d have stripped but really probably never given Allen the captaincy.

And yeah I’d be letting him walk. They should have traded him last season for two firsts.

They will get two top 5 picks this year as a result and if Reid goes at least one more.

Hawks rebuilding the right way, targeting players from other clubs to fill needs… nothing like us… who checks notes… targeted players for other clubs to fill needs…

Just of note. I know he is old but Jamie Cripps wouldn’t be the worst option as a depth player for a year or two.

I guess we normally wouldn’t have all of Wright, Langford and Edwards injured at the one time.

Hawthorn build the core of their team with drafted youth, then fill the holes in the squad with trade and free agency

They did the same thing during the Clarkson years too

They value footy smarts.

That’s a fair ■■■■■■■ difference compared to our approach.

Has anyone informed Hawthorn that they haven’t done a full scale rebuild? When did they acquire Impey?

They clearly did a full scale rebuild, by getting rid of a lot of their older guys

They rebuild the right way

Like Gunston!

Still have Bruest and Frost on their list

Breust cant get a game we could take him for a year would be invaluable to mentor young guys like like Kako and Caddy with his experenice and premiership success

Too late for Breust.
Lost a yard and wouldn’t be any use to us.

It’s interesting, a lot of what I read on here bases successful list management based on hawthorn. Hawks have improved their list this year but I still don’t see it as a great list. Brisbane, gws, Gold Coast, Sydney have better lists.

I don’t think we need to look at hawthorn as the best in class list management. We need to look at them as best in class from a culture and high performance standard perspective.

In my opinion their success is due to the culture and high performance standards Mitchell and the team have instilled. I absolutely hate thei guy but the system and culture they have built is what has gotten them here. Not top class list management

They did get rid of him.

They obviously decided as basically a free hit he was worth bringing back
