Trade talk - from October 2024 (Part 7)

The past recruiters didn’t get access to the cream picks on a consistent basis.

Ridiculous. you pick the best player for your club.

F*ck the draft analysts opinions.

I would say the reason for those teams success wasn’t necessarily the picks, sure they absolutely helped, but it was more of the shift in culture and reorganisation that birthed a competitive side.

I’m not sure what the point of this is? Everyone has lauged at North not drafting tall players. No strategy can overcome total incompetence.

Agree, but majority of list managers wouldn’t operate this way as the stakes are too high.

Yep, it definitely looks like incompetence.

I think the point here is that you can’t win a premiership without a good culture, no matter what picks are made or players traded in. But even with a good culture you need to bring in good talent.

Any premiership achieved will stand on many successful legs. If some legs are missing, the others won’t hold you up. You can argue that GWS despite all their talent hasn’t won the big one due to a poor coach and possibly culture. Melbourne’s culture appears to have wrecked any repeat attempts. You can get lots of things right, but if one or two critical elements go wrong success will elude you.

Yeah, definitely don’t think you can win a flag without some big draft hauls, but the sides I referenced didn’t miss the opportunity to grab stars via trade when the option was there, and in Geelong and Brisbane’s case, I think the traded-in stars ended up having a bigger impact in their premiership years than their top-end draftees.

Brisbane for me is an interesting case study, in that they spent big on Lachie Neale coming off a finish of 15th, having been down for years before. They got youth in that they believed in, and didn’t wait for them to fully develop before looking at trade. That was risky, but a nice example of how risky it is to skip trading for stars when you have the opportunity. There’s really no formula to building a premiership list – just a lot of good pragmatic decisions.

I’m all for Reid with the proviso that the club gets ruthless and gets some picks back in. If we moved on Parish and a few others I’d go for it.

The only positive for north is they can still cherry pick the best of what they drafted and the others are still valuable assets to another team.

They can trade out a young guy for more draft assets or a prospective kp.

How do you think the majority of that list would be rated if they were drafted to a side with established talent around them, say a Geelong or Brisbane? Just bottoming out by getting rid of anyone worth draft capital is not the answer.

Brisbane had a short period of being down and used their draft picks, really nothing different than what the vast majority of teams do. They didn’t deliberately have a prolonged period of bottoming out to gain draft picks like say a North or Melbourne of recent times. Which I would consider rebuilding though the draft. They really nailed their trades and of course the NGA and F/S helped.

Disagree.

I think it is. That’s where the list is at.

Most of them are not up to it, and don’t have the resolve to compete at the highest level.

That’s without even discussing the lack of skills.

Didn’t brisbane also get AFL assistance package.
They got a end of first round priority pick, which traded to suns and turned into Cedric Cox and future mid round pick which was traded for Charlie cameron.

Also I was just thinking about it, they had a player exodus that forced their hand. No players would have wanted to be traded to them at that stage even if they wanted to use their draft capital on trades. Very similar to us when Daniher, Saad and Fantasia wanted out. Except we copped at ■■■■ draft.

Just to clarify, are you talking about our list or the draftees that North chose?

I don’t fully agree with this argument. I feel strong teams are often formed on the back of having key players come through and play seasons together.

If you have to trade players out for picks, you then have to wait 3/4 years for the new players to develop, which sets your list build back.

Melbourne and Brisbane were able to have a strong core and then traded in guns in positions of need.

I didn’t say it was a perfect scenario, just pointing out it’s not the end of the world and is recoverable.

Being able to land 3 players (ATM) in the mid season draft gives us the ability to address some list issues INCLUDING the possibility to draft Harley Reid as well.

Our issue trade wise is the players that we want moved on are basically worthless, plus they all have potential upside.

Jones/Cox - one or both should go but worth bugger all in trade value, means we might keep them again.

Tsatas, Hobbs, Parish, Shiel are all worth more to us than in a trade.

Maybe it is the lack of strategy and planning and being indecisive on who we need and roles they play and the current guys play or we expect them to play.

Its like many wanted Wright gone prior to last week - now its handy to have him on the list, as otherwise Gerryn would probably be playing.
