Trade talk - from October 2024 (Part 7)

Pretty sure he was the only fit ruck Port had when he debuted.

I reckon if Vigo debuts for us this year then something similar has gone wrong for us.

If Visentini debuts this year, it’s more likely he’ll be a forward that rucks rather than a pure ruckman imo.

Port have the better Visentini brother?

People seem to think Ruckman are like goalkeepers. They can’t play any other position.

And we must have 5 ready-made back ups, in case they all come down with gastro at the same time.

But don’t even suggest the 28 year old, 200cm key forward can do it…… as he’s not a ā€˜full time’ ruckman.

There’s almost 3 years between them and Vigo just finished his first season. Give the kid some time before you start the routine pls.

Fair enough just seems we always end up with the lesser talented brother

I dno, I think you’d really struggle to find anyone that would have taken Brad over Matthew.

Who has suggested we should have 5 pure rucks on the list???

Simon was better than Justin

I’m going to take a risk here and not go back and look at the stats, but from my memory from the point Justin left us and went to Carlton I’d say his career was better than his brothers. I will give a caveat and say I was very young and may be wrong.

Justin was No.1 Ruck for a long time at Carlton.
By the numbers he probably would have been superior in Rucking.

Simon was a tap craftsman, strong overhead around the ground, and kicked a lot of goals.
He could only kick 45-50m tops, but had a very sound action kicking for goal, very accurate.

Simon easily the superior all round player.

Over his career no doubt. Some of his highlights I’ve seen are sublime, I was too young to remember any of those things. I do remember Justin in the 90’s I actually think he was underrated I also remember him going head to head with Simon and taking the honours probably very late 80’s.

Yep, he might have been the first of the really tall Ruckman.
I’m sure that height would have worried Simon.

Contested mark stats, and hit outs to advantage would be an interesting comparison.
I’m not sure if they are even attainable from the 80’s games ?

Edit…here’s a famous goal from Justin during the '93 Finals Series.
He had a bit of breeze behind his back…

Simon with 2 flags to his name and a Normie.
Justin 1 flag.
Simon was a better mark and a better kick, around goals he was very dependable.

On the Thursday night of the 93 GF I knew we had the flag when I saw Mark Alvey picked in the FC side, and from memory they left out Kouta. Parkin won 4 flags and was still an idiot.

Smack was fun to watch, 1 good thing immediately followed by 20 off the chart stupid things.

What I was trying to say putting aside everything else except form and with the benefit of hindsight, we would have been better off keeping Justin and retiring Simon. However I know in the real world that never would of happened as Simon was already a club champion.

You mean like Bryan?

These are the stats where Simon had it all over Justin. Much better mark and much better tap to advantage. I tried to find the quote from Diesel Williams, but I clearly remember after a State of Origin game, Williams said he had never had been given the ball on a platter from taps, then he had from Simon.
He almost sounded jealous of our midfielder’s getting such silver service week in, week out. He had been playing with FC for a number of years with Justin already up until then, so the implication was that while Justin clearly won a lot of taps due to his height, the control of his taps were a bit hit and miss.
Exhibit A Last Qtr of 84 GF, check out how many times Daisy is spoon fed at the centre bounces. It was crucial to us winning the game.

That couldn’t work.

Diesel joined Carlton in 92; Simon Madden retired in 92.
