Trade talk - from October 2024 (Part 7)

A club getting that many picks inside 30 wont happen again.

Last time a team had a draft haul like Richmond was the expansion sides when they entered

The more players we trade out, the better chance we have to finish last and get the no.1 pick.

Thats the goal.

I have 5 players gone - Tsatas, Shiel, Goldy, Menzie and Davey Jnr. With another 6 with question marks (Draper, Hobbs, Cox, Laverde, Blakiston and McMahon). I reckon Setterfield will get a new deal from us but may have to wait late like the last time and I am also assuming Bryan will also re-sign. I’d be leaning on Hobbs getting a shorter deal to stay and maybe Laverde gets 1 year to be depth too. I think Draper will get better offers from other clubs and that might force him out of the door and I’m not very confident that Cox can overcome the concussion issues so sadly feel he will be forced to retire. Having seen very little of our MSD players I’ll confidently expect them to be added to our rookie roster! So I think we will end up replacing 7 players in total from our list.

At this stage I don’t think any of the trade targets are coming to us…Butters will prefer to go to a contending team, Reid will go to Geelong and Rowell will either stay a Sun or become a member of Klan. We’ll be forced to hit the draft with 5 picks (inc. Draper compensation pick wherever that lands) and maybe rookie the other 2. Stating the bleeding obvious I know but that’s where we’re at I think!!

Harsh on McMahon

Why? I think he’ll get added to our rookie list!

It didn’t help, but it has also proved that giving free high end picks to a basket case also doesnt work.
Points in favour Richmond (Pre review)2004 they had 5 picks inside the first 20 ( picks 1,4,12,16 and 20) with pick 1 being a priority.

Then they get handed another priority pick in 2007 being pick 18 after already having pick 2.
In that period they had 9 top 20 selections with 4 of them being top 10 and it did nothing to improve them in that period. it was only after the review in 2015, where they decided to back in hardwick that they started improving.

Same with North getting 3 extra first round picks in the 2023/24 seasons.
Since 2017 they have had 12 top 20 selections with 9 being top 10 this on top of having one of the best coaching groups money can buy.
Its pretty clear that no amount of free hits work if the administration is KaKa.

If we clull another 7 brings us to 14 players in 2 years.

I say there would be one more big list turnover next year

Also known as the Leroy Jetta rule.

Why not?

Richmond did trade out a host of fairly handy players to get those draft picks.

And they actively traded up as well. The first trade of the period was between them and Brisbane so the lions could get the second Ashcroft

Many of those they traded were 3x premship players where clubs ended up paying overs in draft picks.

Rioili fetched them 2 first rounders who on our list would get us that?

Depends on who and if the club chasing it is willing to pay.

Gold Coast wanted/needed him and had the capital.

Dont think we will have any takers if we do it wont be first round picks

Laverede was basicly free and still no one was intrested

Merrett?

It’s not really in the spirit of what richmond actually did, but two first round picks, two second round picks, that list of players, plus having an NGA who might be a top 30 bid? We could easily get 7 picks inside 30 if that’s all we were trying to do.

That’s about it

If Zach came to us at the end of the year and said that he wanted to go someonwhere for success I wouldn’t even try to twist his arm to stay.

That’s simply not true, half the team is not enough.

If that were the case sure but don’t think he will now. Last chance of moving was last year when Saints came knocking

Keep - Ridley, Redman, Draper, Parish, Perkins

Put up for trade - McKay, Jones, Tsatas, Bryan, Langford, Wright I also add Hobbs + Gresham

Don’t think we get anything for Cox he will be retired.

You want one of Langford/Perkins (I want Perkins to reach 100 games and Langford is older with some more performances under his belt.)

Wright - Expendable if May looks like a Goer, want to fast track May.

With McKay moved on opens up spot for Hayes to play full back.

The players I have put up for trade probably get stuff all, so maybe go after future picks or pick upgrades.

Gresham to Carlton joing his brother in their NGA
Tsatas + McKay to North
Jones to Hawthorn
Wright to Brisbane
Bryan + Hobbs to West Coast
