Trade talk - from October 2024 (Part 7)

That rules us out then as the suns don’t need much and we don’t have much

It would have to be a player like Ridley but his injury history should have most clubs wary

Yep he’s worth it. Matty Rowell is great but not right.

Although I wonder why we never got a truckload of money thrown at Bailey Smith watching him play.

At 24 he would have been perfect playing alongside Durham and Martin - taking us up the ladder.

Exactly this. Rowell, Butters types would be us trying to cut corners. Reid fits right in the age demo, would be perfect.

Although I’m worried our incoming end of year will put him off.

Smith would not have wanted to come to a poorly run club like ours. Wouldn’t have mattered how much money we offered him, he was always going to geelong.

A definite bust at number 1 - should have clarified. However his kicking is hurting us big time on multiple ocassions.

Jack Watts, Tom Boyd, Paddy McCartin, Jonathan Patton, Tom Scully … they are busts.

A very good small defender who will play 250 games+ and consistently be in our top 10 players. That may not have been our expectations, but it is certainly not a bust.

Some bracket-creep of the term ‘bust’ at play here.

Its not really always kicking, but decison making to slow it down and hit a target or give it to someone who can rather than just banging it forward, remember a passage where he could have handed off to Martin in midfield but choose to bang it on his boot inside 50 was a bit of a nothing kick.

Our club is not actually poorly run even if our team is not where we want it to be. Geelong is an enticing lifestyle club as well as being very well run and their team are continual challengers. Pretty attactive package. They don’t pay as much as other clubs, who need to attract talent but Smith was looking for more than $$ obviously.

I think he probably is on a pretty good contract.

A footballer who’s caught on the Bolivian marching powder im guessing is just too hard for our club to touch given the saga.

He’s a real energy bunny every game. But to me that’s gotta be fitness.

I wouldn’t say Tom boyd was a bust. He was instrumental in the dogs winning the flag. Without him its questionable if they actually succeeded or not.
Surely, that makes him a success. If not, what’s the point of the game.

Yeah, obviously, they are better and hiding the fall out from the shinanigans, look at Jack stevens gets stabbed or stabs someone and the media at the time “Nothing to see here”.

Agree he was 100% a success. Won a flag and went out on his own terms. Longevity wise the dogs would have absolutely wanted more footy out of him but he reached the summit and was a big contributor towards it. Can’t do much more than that.

So whats the latest on Draper?
I seen people suggest at a few non official essendon talk shows recently where draper has been at, hes been asked about returning to adelaide/staying at essendon and people have been saying his responses hadnt sound re assuring

Going back a bit though.

Could not disagree with this more.

He is exactly what we need.
It relieves the physical pressure on Caldwell & Durham.
Surround with creative ball users (ie. Draft more)

Then you punt Parish and Hobbs for whatever you can get for them.
Shiel - delist
Tsatas - hold
Setters - depth

Historically, if we get through the bye and he hasn’t signed, it more likely than not means he’s gone

Each week he doesn’t sign increases the chances of him leaving. With his injuries I think tenure would be his highest priority, Rumor has it he has been offered 4 years, I don’t think that will cut it. We will find out in the next couple of months.

Rowell is one dimensional.

At least Reid offers a more multi dimensional player. He can take a mark and kick a goal, fend off, rack it up as well when switched on and younger with a higher ceiling.

Rowell adds tackling. But is hardly an upgrade on Caldwell and doesn’t really improve the mix. similar build and player to Caldwell.

We should in no way give Draper more than 5 years. We need to stop giving these long-term deals to average players
