Trade talk - from October 2024 (Part 7)

Get your hand off it Nino.

As a footballer. She’s just average. Not worth bringing her to Essendon.

Besides, the AFL and AFLW seasons barely overlap, so it’s not like being at the same team means they’d see each other a heap more. It’d make fk all difference.

Must say…the future image of Harley Reid sitting a declining Cripps on his ar*e after an attempted tackle has me slightly aroused.

Fukit…I’m in

What about JUH to Essendon after it becomes clear he has irreconcilable differences with Bevo and the Bulldogs players (wink)

Any chance Reid can have his own thread?
And then this thread for everyone else?
Serious request.

And name it HARLEY FEST 2025

The best player in the league is always in dispute. But there’s usually a stand out top 5
And Reid could be in the top 5.

Say Bontempelli, Cripps, Daicis, Petracca, Neale

Gary Ablett J r was probably an outlier in. Best In comp for a while. But even then you had Dane Swan and Buddy and Hodge, Selwood, etc

Easy to see similarities with Reid and Dusty.

ā€˜What’s your read on Reid’

I’m not very good at play on words.

I’d tell Harley to sit for another 12 months, request when he is out of contract.

Spend this year getting Rowell and LDU. Next year getting Harley.

Pay them the Geelong way, team friendly contract and then get Andrew Welsh to ā€œemployā€ them outside of footy.

DRAPER HARLEY ROWELL
DURHAM LDU MARTIN

with Caldwell and Tsatas of the bench and Merrett off the HFF

We’d be using too much draft capital to get Rowell.

It would need to be a choice between Rowell or Reid.
UNLESS, Draper left and we got some return on Parish, Hobbs, 2mp.

Edit…trading out 3 players, finding suiters, and getting adequate compensation is not easy.

There is definitely smoke there for Reid coming to us at the end of this year, a few things work in our favour with Reids relationship with Caddy, dating Duursmas sister, also lines up well that we have 2 x 2025 1st, 2 x 2025 2nd and our future 1st, 2nds to use for 2026 and 2027. A lot of front loaded deals and some retirements (Shiel mostly) that will free up a lot of cap space.

The timing is also perfect with Warner requesting a move back to the West,

  • Eagles will end up with the higher 1st rounder (Ess or Melb), 2nd rounder, potentially a player (Guelf?) + Warner.
  • Sydney will end up with 2 x 1sts (Ess or Melb) + 2nd
  • Dons will end up with Reid.

Maybe some 2nd/3rd round picks swapped around also.

Trade one of our firsts for more capital the year after? F1 and a second back? Use the 2 seconds to get from GCS. Net outcome:

2025
2Ɨ 1sts
1Ɨ 2nd

2026
2 Ɨ 1sts
1 Ɨ 2nd

THis is certainly going to be an interesting off season.

My gut feel, is the cost of Reid is just too high and will go even higher if he has a great year. 20m over 10years and costing potentially 3 first round picks seems excessive for anyone, let alone a 19yo who has shown glimpses so far.

I would love Reid at the club, don’t get me wrong, but we could potentially get two superstars for the price of Reid.

I would be more than happy to see Rowell and LDU running around in the Red and Black for the next 8-10 years.

Shiel handing over the #9 to Harley would be pretty unreal.

I’m reading wayyy too much in this but I saw a clip from Footy Classified where they are discussing Reid and Eddie said to Hird ā€œYou’ve got some mailā€. Jimmy then says he believes Reid will leave and goes on to talk about the sort of deal WC should look at. I’m wondering what mail Hird got. Could well be a glimmer of hope for us.

Is it possible for us to end up with a compensation pick for Draper? I have no idea how that stuff works and the quick google I just did suggests it relies on a net loss of players via trade/free agency.

I was wondering if we can find a taker for Cox or Wright and we lose Draper to Adelaide, what sort of pick would we get in compo? Ralph has suggested the offer in front of Draper is $800k over 6 years. Is that enough to generate an end of first round?

The obvious reason for asking is if we can turn Draper into an end of first round pick this year, how appealing is it to offload the other two firsts we already hold this year and a future first for Harley?

I believe the free agency compo only takes into account in/out free agents - the FA period closes before trade week so any compo pick has to be settled before that happens

So if we lose Draper but bought in say TDK under FA, we wouldn’t get one
