Trade talk - from October 2024 (Part 7)

It was based on a hypothetical that some of the injured players might want to leave.

Also Langford’s 28, turning 29. We’re a better team with Langford over May in the team. But if Langford and another player (Perkins) help get points to trade into the GC/Port pick, and that pick is a top 10 or might help in a trade for a BIG FISH, then its all worthy of thought.
In the meantime we’re playing players for the future success of the team.

The first two

Yep. 9/10 ruckman never going to make you a competitive team. And Draper is not the 1/10. As much as I like him he’s just a top up. Big log like Meek is just as effective

It’s absolutely a write off.

Next year is a development year. I expect that we’ll start seeing some quality ball movement, because we starting to get some players who are good kicks and seem to have decent footy IQ.

Most of our senior players are poor disposals of the ball. It’s time to get those guys out of the club.

This is what happens when you butcher recruitment, you have a bunch of players who are average footballers who cannot carry out a game plan.

I agree with everything you say, except the write off part.
I can’t accept that all the improvements you are talking about can be considered a write off. To me a write off would be not changing anything, going into next year with the same players, game plan, coaches, S&C staff and poor drafting & recruitment.

Write off is accepting we finish bottom 4.

Might have to forget about Harley

Thank goodness, we can keep our warchest for more Gresham and Mckay types

Interesting coincidence. The same day Brad says he’d make a play if Reid was available, Harley’s team calls WC to lock in a contract. Obviously the thought of playing for us was the last straw.

Nudge nudge Dylan Shiel.

Nothing wrong at all with trading for senior players. You have to do it to build a premiership side.

The issue with the Shiel/Smith trades was as a whole we overpaid for them and they weren’t the right types of players for what we needed

I think Smith was, but his knees screwed that up.

Iirc it was pick 11 and 2 seconds from GWS we then used those to get Stringer and Saad

A few years later we end up getting Cadlwell who giants drafted with pick 11

Shiel the only that farked us imo

The reason we got him cheap was because of the knees though. We traded for him knowing he had the knee condition.

Plus I don’t think we needed another small midfielder who didn’t win contested ball

I honestly won’t be mad if we miss out on a Reid or Butters like talent, we really need to build a solid foundation of decent players before we try lure in a big fish. We’ve already messed up with our recruits in the past e.g Stringer, Shiel, Goddard, and etc. Let’s build a strong core then go for gold.

100% agree.

The only types we should be looking at from other clubs, is players who were first round picks a few years ago who can’t get game time. Like Caldwell.

Especially any players who can play a role for us.

it’s a strange position, generally i’d agree with this, however we are in the odd position that if all things are equal next year, where exactly is the club going to fit all these young players ?

this year is an exception to the scott coaching mantra.

next year the backline has 4-5 mainstays (mckay, ridley, reid, mcgrath redman and well roberts now)

the midfield has it’s mainstays (merrett, caldwall, durham, parish martin, durrsma)

the forwardline already has youngsters in caddy and kako, do you really think brad is gonna go full youngsters up there ?

then you already have a couple of decent youngsters who you will need to try and squeeze into the side in clarke, johnson.

the only way hitting the draft and bringing in a lot of youngsters works, is if you cull guys like redman, parish, langford, draper.
because otherwise you’re just doing what we already are with tsartas, plonking high draft picked kids in the vfl cos you aren’t willing to try then above the incumbents
