Trade talk - from October 2024 (Part 7)

Essendon will be a cellar dweller in 2025 and, with up to 8 list cloggers likely to be cleared out before 2026, will be the same in 2026.
No sane AFL player in their prime will want to move to Essendon.

Good - would rather get top draft picks than trade for players - we really need to keep hitting the draft again

Unless it’s Harley Reid. Let’s be honest, we are not winning a final in the next 5 years unless we are able to bring in Reid.

HARLEY HAPPY TO WAIT

West Coast Eagles star Harley Reid will wait until later in the season to weigh up a contract extension, as the Eagles look to tie down their star youngster.

According to the Herald Sun’s Jon Ralph, industry sources believe the Eagles would need to offer Reid $1.5 million-$2 million for him to sign a deal for his fourth season in 2028.

After being selected with pick 1 in the 2023 national draft, Reid has taken to AFL life like a duck to water, quickly becoming one of the AFL’s most recognisable faces.

He’s the sort of player new coach Andrew McQualter can build an entire team around as the Eagles look to surge up the ladder and return to finals action.

According to Ralph, Reid is ‘happy to wait’ and see where the club tracks under McQualter and remains open-minded about his future.

His partner Carlton AFLW player Yasmin Duursma has been living with Reid in Perth lately, but will return to Victoria at some stage to undertake her own pre-season training with the Blues.

Tasmanian duo Ryley Sanders and Colby McKercher will also reportedly wait until later in the season to consider their own contract extensions.

The trio were a part of the first group of first-round picks to sign three-year deals, rather than two-years upon being drafted.

Other players taken in the first round of the 2023 draft include Nick Watson, Darcy Wilson and Nate Caddy, who are adding extra dollars onto their next contracts with every game they play.

Rowell & management using the tried and tested negotiation play book.

Leak that Rowell was meeting oppo teams back home. Cue media feenzy, club supporter salivation / socials… current club (apparently) upping offer.

Few days later… nothing to see here.

*Does that mean a contract extension is on the cards? *
Rowell - “I think so.”

“The AFL will this year allow clubs to trade draft picks two years in advance for the first time. After finally approving the extension of trading picks one future draft in advance to two last year, the League waited until 2025 for the rule to be activated.”

Can they also stop pussyfooting around it and just bring in explicit salary cap trading?

It already happens but as a wink-wink sort of thing. Just cut the cord and make it a proper trade mechanism.

This. Make it official and regulate it.

Hope so, buying picks using cap space needs to happen asap.

Reduces the value of those amazing second rounders

didn’t they do that just to allow the Gellong Bowes + top 10 heist?

Just re-signed with the Lions for another two years until the end of 2027

We had our chance to draft Lohmann.

But our List manager at the time, didn’t rate small forwards.
