Trade talk - from October 2025 (Part 10)

I would like to know who are the “big 4” clubs currently.

Collingwood for sure, who else?

It Carlton and Essendon are out then who is in?

Can’t be dogs because they barely get a crowd

Can’t be Hawks because they dont get anyone to away games and drop off so fast after a bad season

Richmond didnt even get 30k vs GC at the G onna beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon despite having over 110k members (apparently)

So who is left?

Weren’t**

It was an interesting typo

You forgot james kelly, sure he was a top up but he was all class and stayed on the list a few after the players got back.

And it’s fascinating to me, that people continually complain about the fact we continue going to the draft because “there’s no garruntees”…. And they think there are better options via trade.

That list of players we have traded in is seriously horrendous.

Imagine if we had given up on drafting players, and our list was that group of players we brought in via trade. You’d be a wooden spoon rabble for a decade.

West Coast and Collingwood are the 2 biggest clubs in the league.

Yeah, but the ironic thing is our drafting has been just as diabolical as our trading over that same period.

There’s no guarantees when it comes to trading for players.

I agree , but there is also no guarantee with drafting either. Hence the mire that we are currently in.

There’s also opportunity in role.

All of these were a big issues and affects each other.

  • Fitness
  • Development
  • List management
  • Drafting

If players are not fit or always injured it affects the development of players as they can’t play games continuously. In addition, if development coaches are bad players don’t come on. Then after drafting players like Ridley, BZT, Brand, Reid, Hayes, then you have to still go and get McKay, as they haven’t come on, Which affects the list management.

You draft Harry Jones , Cox, Eyre and get Wright and think you forwards are locked in and they don’t come on, so you have to go all in on Caddy, which is the right option. Then you lose a potential small forward option.

You have a bad coach who can’t spot talent, and you lose a good player because he wasn’t getting games. Then you have to go spend a 1st rounder on a good kicker out of the back line.

It is a circle work.

But without getting all of these right, no point trying to bring in players. Because they won’t have the right environment to proper, you you end up losing out on draft capital like Shiel situation.

Why can’t we try to get Bailey as a RFA and go to the draft??

Because people think its a mind set that we think we are close and going for a big fish but don’t understand we are getting a 6 - 8 year player for free (trade wise)

We can try but why would he come here?
