Trade talk - from October 2025 (Part 10)

But trading out Merrett would have given us even more picks

Hobbs, Lual and Setterfield should already be delisted

I say they will now that the trade period is over

I think they will keep Hobbs and get rid of Setterfield and Lual

-edit- or the 2012 brownlow medal

If that is legit, and hawthorn only contacted us 30 hours before the deadline- Merrett and his manager should be livid at hawthorn

Feels incredibly amateur from hawthorn, unless they never had any real intention of giving up anything decent for Zac and just thought they could bully us into giving him up cheaply

IMO this was clearly a strategic and coordinated effort between the Hawks and Merrett’s management to call our bluff. They failed.

It just appeared half assed.

They really didn’t have the right draft capital - I would have expected them to be engaging with other clubs to work through options on picks etc that could entice us to make the trade.

Twomey said similar. They started negotiations later to avoid player discussions etc

Also said they assumed by making a situation untenable that they thought it would be more leverage to get the deal done.

Just smacks of arrogance from both the manager and club.

Yep.

Who do Hawks think they are by wine and dining contracted players, getting them to commit then not want to pay up.

It’s a scummy way to do business not only you ■■■■ off the club with the contracted player but also the manger and his player if a deal doesn’t get brokerd

If Zac has any brains he should be putting all the blame on his manager and Hawks and not Essendon

Henry must be impressed.

Merrett might well blame his manager or the hawks, but that still doesn’t mean he wants to be at Essendon. At most it means he doesn’t want to be at the hawks any more.

I wonder if they would react the same way if the shoe was on the other footy

“The family club” more like an arrogant POS of a club

All Hawthorn seem to have done the entire way through is deliberately make Essendon annoyed.

That’s fine.

I want our club to start despising others again.

Given a bit of distance, the more I look at that offer, the more it looks like absolute pants.
I’m more than okay with turning it down.

It’s basically 10(ish) and a pick we don’t really have a lot of use for this year, pick 16-20 next year and a VFL player.

Dude.

I’m happy to put most of the blame on the hawks, but if we were in fact open to at least hearing offers, we could have called them on day one of the trade period and said “what’s your offer?”. Making it sound like they sprung the whole idea on us two days from the end of the trade period is a bit disingenuous.
