He brings the same stuff as Setterfield which is a senior body and experience whilst we transition Merrett, Parish etc out of the side.
The kids are 100% the priority, and the bulk of the list is now U21s, but you need some balance and protection for them, otherwise you’re trotting out an U21 side to get smashed each week. He’s not a long term solution and i’m not suggesting he’s anything other than a stopgap, but imo will add more value as an SSP/late draft pick than a kid who misses out or state league jobber.

So if Hawks and Cats get King and Butters for nothing as RFA’s because their draft picks are crap, so compensation pick is better but a low club would need to give up their high picks because their picks are good, it just shows what a ■■■■ system this has become and how easy it is to replenish for the good sides.

Today’s episode of Gettable:
- Dees are chasing Hawks forward Calsher Dear. Other clubs have flagged their interest in Dear who would likely be looking for opportunities with King coming into the side. Dees are interested in Bailey McDonald from the Hawks as well.
- Clubs considering taking on Zac Williams from the Blues as part of the extra indigenous rookie spot. Carlton will be unable to delist and resign the same way as per the rules, with rivals looking to take advantage.
- Tassie has already approached a number of clubs about pick purchasing, in essentially trading for experienced players on contracts for draft picks. The idea that Tassie would trade out high end draft picks if clubs covered the contract and salary for the trade target.
- Gold Coast are looking to sign Jake Rogers and firming to stay on a two-year deal.
- Jordan Ridley, has uncertainty about where he is playing next year. Won’t be Gold Coast who aren’t pursuing him, and now looking very unlikely for a move to Brisbane. Ridley may stay at Essendon or elsewhere in Victoria. Three-years left with no real suitors popping up yet.
- Riley Hardeman, hasn’t been getting the opportunities from Norf this year having only played four games and is unsigned. Same as Zane Duursma. Both may look elsewhere.
- The battle for rucks. Essendon hold pick 1 in the draft, with Twomey suggesting this year it isn’t overly ideal given there is no standout prospect in the open pool. There is Arki Butler, Gus Teixeira, Ethan Drever, HVH all in consideration. Both Richmond and Essendon are keen on Butler, not to say that he is the best of the pack.

Scrap compensation system for free agents.
But bring in compensation picks for teams who haven’t won finals.
No finals win 10 years - End of first round compensation pick
No finals win 20 years - First round compensation pick directly after pick. (every year until they win a final)

I don’t have a huge issue with FA but my wife hates it for the reason that good sides give up nothing. She has maintained all along that the club receiving the FA should lose points in the DVI equivalent of the compo given out and only the first round to count for that purpose plus points loading
So using say Butters to Geelong for example.
Port get pick 5 compo (1795)
Geelong need to give up 1795 points from first round this year ( currently pick 12 so 1140).
They are then in deficit by 655 points next year and their first gets pushed back by that

So lose your good players for nothing, but not to worry, after ten years of being crap, you get an end of first round pick. Yeah, that solves everything.

Yep, thats better. The AFL has to first admit that their original Free Agency mantra that it helps crap teams was ridiculous. And the AFLPA has to accept which they likely won’t as they will think it will make free agents less attractive and thus restrict easy movement.

But it will be multiple teams for multiple years making the mid table purgatory even less desirable and the lower end of the 10 an avoid zone.
i can’t see how it can be any worse than it currently is.

Top 4 teams just get too much of a free ride with F/S, academy and FA. There needs to be more balancing to allow more movement up the ladder.
I was think zero compo for top 4, current formula for mid table, bottom 4 and new more generous formula.
