Trade talk - from October 2025 (Part 10)

No ANZAC medal either. Pathetic.

It’ll definitely happen. If Merrett had the option last year he would have pounced on it. A lot of things need to line up, but it’s not “a big myth”.

Crows also did it with Hately.

You aren’t going to get a genuine A grader that way though.

I love the delusion in some Essendon fans though, it’s the Dodoro effect.

Want overs for our players and pay unders for opposition players

More tongue in cheek. Can’t see Butters entertaining that anyway regardless how low we finish.

If Merrett was a free agent then we would’ve taken whatever was the better deal, picks or compo.

Nobody has mentioned player value. We’re talking about a draft mechanism. I don’t think any of our players are worth much. I would have let Merrett walk for a single first round pick last year.

Must admit I can only see Butters going Port of Dogs (childhood team he barracked for). I was told 6 months ago he would be a Dogs player soon by a recruiter in the industry. That’s what the gossip was anyway. But hey I can still dream.

The difference between the two is margarine!

It’s probably a matter of if he chose us and it’s huge if it would cost us justice (this years first) and Bewick to get it done.

Find other ways of getting picks for the Bewick draft. If Butters wants in, then we must get him imo. Unreal player.

At what cost though?

Great player but how much is too much?

To snag a player like Butters, you need to objectively look at our list….. and decide on a handful of players who have value in the open market, who we can afford to lose.

The top 3 players would be Merrett, Ridley and Parish. You could probably throw Langford or Redman in there aswell.

To get a player of Butters quality you need to be trading some players. We have refused to do that in the past.

Yep Parish and then trade Merrett for a future first and on trade it to port. Then something else like Clarke

I’m not suggesting we take Butters, but it doesn’t cost us Bewick regardless of price. We can go into deficit the year following Bewick’s draft. So, if Bewick is good enough you give up or downgrade future picks for him.

Yeah that is the question.

Are you willing to give away our future draft picks, which means we lose access to the likes of Bewick, Rodan and Darwish?

Or being forced to trade a player like Martin, Caddy, or Roberts?

What if Port wanted Sharp & Clarke in the trade??

How long is a piece of string? Couldn’t possibly answer that until Sharp has played footy, but 99% chance the answer is yes, you do that trade.

You’re over simplifying it. There’s multiple avenues to landing NGAs including picks swaps, trades and futures. Far too early to be ruling anything in or out at this stage so why not just enjoy the speculation.

The rules have been changed.

You can’t do that anymore.

If you trade your first round pick, you’re not going to have enough points to match a first round bid.

But it wouldn’t just be Sharp.

They will want 2 top 10 picks PLUS Sharp and maybe more.

Port will be asking for the most ever in a trade IMO
