I mean there’s a tipping point sure… but getting Merrett out helps somewhat, and fills his void. No doubt it’d be future picks and good talent too but the “good talent” is all hypothetical at this point while we wait to see what kind of year Butters, and our guys have.
I’m just firmly in the camp of get him if he’s the least bit interested.
Surely Merrett is still worth at least one first round draft pick for 2026 or a future first for 2027. I could just also see Hawks make the same snakey play and look for another contracted midfielder to lure instead.

You never know. Someone like Sydney might come after Merrett. They are in the premiership window for the next few years. They have Carlton’s first pick too, which will be a top 10 pick.

That doesn’t mention anywhere that you can’t go into deficit. It’s just saying that rather than get a discount, you’ll most likely have to pay a premium. Great idea by the way, this should have always been the case.
