Trade talk - from September 2025 (Part 9)

Ideally.. two top 10s and Zane Duursma

If we want later picks we’ll be able to trade future 3rd or 4th to get back into this draft.

The pivot point in all this was the Draper compo not netting band one (pick 6).

That would have allowed us to be so much more bolder and flexible with our options.

Been behind the 8 ball since.

We don’t help ourselves.

North 2 x first round picks, or one in the top 10.
COllingwood won’t accept/ pay that.

If they had a teens first round pick this year they would use that.

Hird - I believe North are 12-18 months from playing finals, North should be trying to keep him.

That was a major ■■■■ up

No, that’s not the trade.

A truly exceptional offer we couldn’t turn down would be this year’s pick #1 - how the Hawks organise it is up to them, not us.

That offer would really force our Board to seriously re-consider its position, If the Board did and the trader went through, it would not be a hard sell to members and supporters.

Not much control over the Draper compo the end of the day. It is what it is.

I know the UFA stuff is a ■■■■ up. But realistically, I don’t think we would have matched anyway considering we never even tried to offer him the same pay at the end of the day, we weren’t willing to pay up to keep him. Rightfully so

I don’t get why the club didn’t kick up a stink about getting early compo.. I reckon the AFL would have given it to us

we would have matched to the point of us getting band 1

Hawks aren’t getting us pick 1 on their own. That’s “Your dreaming” levels of silly.

If they can somehow get a top 10 pick in this draft at all, I think that’d be enough to turn heads.

True.. I’d take that too

In before the club bots on here say that ‘just if we had managed the cap to ensure Draper was a RFA it doesn’t mean we would have got band 1,’ yeah yeah - I disagree.

If clubs like a guy they will nearly always pay that bit extra to ensure they get them “for free” rather than needing to engage in a trade and spend draft capital. Especially in the Lions case when they need it for Annable.

The only way Essendon should entertain a trade with Hawthorn is by requesting help to get Zac Butters in return, please help us make this happen whilst still retaining a round 1 pick this year and next year.

Whatever we get for Zach Merrett get’s passed on to Port Adelaide plus our pick 5 this year.

Why? Technically we still could have offered him the same amount Adelaide and Brisbane did, no it wouldn’t have forced a trade, but it would have at least equalled the offers for him. We were reportedly offering at minimum 100k less per year and didn’t budge. I don’t see why we would have offered more in the RFA scenario. You still have to be willing to pay it when you match.

I swear, people must like either the theory or romance (family reunion) of getting Zane Duursma because if they’d seen him play at AFL level, they’d be going “no fkg way”.

DO. NOT. WANT.

He’s Perkins but even better at going missing.

I assume you are saying this because you want to use some to trade up. Accumulating and using all those pick in this draft would be a massive mistake.

His nickname could be “The Magician”.

I’m in the camp that pick 6 is better than Draper, but pick 20, may as well have kept Draper.
Restricted free agency could mean we could have restricted Draper to a point where it would net us a first round pick.

We likely thought we had offered enough early days to net us the first round pick, he had good offers from Dons, Crows and Lions.

Allen only had Lions.

It’s more the AFL herbs and spices, them saying he’s not worth it due to age (6 months older than Allen) is a load of bollocks, especially when Oscar Allen has a degenerative knee.

Hmm, I’m a sucker for a good nickname, and I rate this.

Get Mitch Marsh in the draft (BISON), bring in Z. Duursma (MAGICIAN).

I’m almost sold on it now. If we could just get MOOSE from NM as well, I’d be fully sold.

Saying you want to keep Draper is like saying you like being frustrated.
